We just finished our fifth year of homeschooling (including preschool) and I wanted to write about all the study plans we’ve chosen so far and what I’ve learned. Next week I will share my plans for the upcoming school year. I hope this is a helpful informative article for those starting out in homeschooling or just looking for some inspiration.

When Liam was four, we worked at The Peaceful Preschool for Peaceful Press. Each week we focused on a letter of the alphabet with suggestions for fun picture books and simple crafts. When Liam was four years old, we realized that he was a very talented child. He wanted to learn to read, so – I didn’t know what to do – I found the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons on Amazon and we got into it. A few weeks into the book, Liam was reading in 2nd grade.
When Liam was 5, he read the entire Magic Tree House series. We had so much fun scouring the thrift stores for more books in the series and she devoured them in the car on the way home. At the time, my husband, Shawn, and I were considering many different options. But after testing Liam’s reading and comprehension levels (he tested in 4th grade before entering kindergarten), the school suggested he try an he is a house. They were afraid that learning phonics would be boring in the classroom, and so were we. Kindergarten is optional in North Carolina, where we live, so while homeschooling was foreign to us and didn’t seem like a long-term option, it seemed like the right decision for her birthday.

In retrospect, the first year of homeschooling is tougher than it should be. We homeschooled about 3 hours a day, which is more than I would say for a 5 or 6 year old today. But reading a lot of books and creating a predictable daily routine suited Liam so well, I had no regrets. Although I love Sonlight and appreciate that our year is dedicated to us, it is not as “family” as I had hoped, and I can’t imagine that this curriculum can teach so many children at different levels in it. at home. However, I recommend Sonlight as a great way to start your homecoming journey.
During Liam’s senior year, I read Susan Schaeffer Macaulay’s book The Sake Child and fell in love with the idea of the Charlotte Mason Method. For this reason, I went looking for the purest Charlotte Mason curriculum available, and I turned to A Gentle Feast. It was very similar to the books and methods used in Ambleside Online (Charlotte Mason’s free online course), but unlike Ambleside, A Gentle Feast was clearly designed for fathers. parents. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to homeschooling, and I’ve learned that it’s important to match your school to your family. I also learned that I don’t care if my child memorizes a familiar rhyme or learns someone’s song. I was worried that they were learning the Word of God. I want us to invest daily in our spiritual life by reading the Bible together, praying, singing hymns and memorizing the Scriptures. (Some included mild celebrations, but poetry and folk songs were also part of the curriculum.)
With this understanding, “morning time” was born. I also want to tap into the rich studio of composers and artists through accessible living picture books. So I added that too. I wrote the first Morning Time book mainly for my family, but when others started to follow, I was happy!

This year we studied American history with The Playful Pioneers from The Peaceful Press. It’s a great way to start teaching two kids because it’s really a family guide, and Peaceful Press uses many of Charlotte Mason’s methods (but in my experience it’s less strict than A Gentle Feast ). Jennifer Pepito has created a wonderful collection of American history books that we love. We put it together in the early hours of the morning and it’s a match made in heaven! Playful Pioneers is carefully written and sincerely teaches a story that is still suitable for children. That’s why I appreciate the balance Jennifer creates in reading from a pioneer and from a Native American perspective.
Since we started this training program in the spring and worked through the summer months, we finished a little early. So after that I spent a few months working on Mission: Wonders of the World from Half a Hundred Acre Wood. This curriculum is for 2nd through 8th grade, so our kids are young. I tweaked it a bit as I went along, but we loved the biographies of the missionaries, the list of picture books for each part of the world, and the fact that everything was made in a very simple way for teachers. I recommend it, especially for fourth graders and up.
After loving The Playful Pioneers, we decided to try another tutorial from The Peaceful Press: The Precious People. This is an ancient and world history curriculum in the same format as Playful Pioneers. The book is full of beautiful pictures, crafts and recipes, and great read-aloud suggestions. It starts with learning the Jewish holidays, which I find interesting and my children not so much. It took us six months and it didn’t seem like my kids would be part of it after that, so we stopped halfway through. Maybe we’ll look at it again when they’re a little older and more interested in learning about ancient cultures… I don’t want to just push it on 6 and 8 year olds. I think the curriculum was very well organized, it just wasn’t there.” didn’t work for us at the time.
In the second half of the year we moved on to Beautiful Feet Books Worldwide in Picture Books Part 1 and 2. It was a huge hit with us – we loved the selection of picture books, the engaging activities and notebooks and the way everything was designed. I highly recommend these guides.
