As the Wild World phenomenon developed and our culture gained more public attention, questions and concerns arose about camp size, relative inclusiveness or exclusivity, interaction requirements, and the placement process. How can warehouses continue to grow and change? Where do we stand on camping, plug and play or casual camping? What generation will we be in in the next five to 10 years?
Review: The 1975
To answer these questions and guide the Black Rock City community at large, we need a vision. We needed a clear, actionable vision that gave us leadership positions without being redundant. We need a vision that inspires us as individuals, leaders, citizens and members of groups. We needed a vision that was not the product of a select mind, but of the wisdom of our society.
After months of hard work and community feedback, we’re excited to share this vision with you. This vision will define the cultural direction of Black Rock City residences for the next five to 10 years.
Over the past nine months, you, the Burning Man Community of the World, have shared your concerns, experiences, hopes, and ideas with the Cultural Guide Organizing Team. This group of 19 Black Rock City citizens, which also includes camp leaders, staff, community members, local contacts and board members, reviewed extensive community feedback and co-authored this vision. We heard a lot in surveys, interviews, community discussions, online feedback and live input sessions. This vision highlights many of the cultural challenges we face at home in Black Rock City. The field of vision is the city itself – where we live, the culture of the camps, and how we as individuals and camps affect the city. We’re talking about all camps and types of camping – theme camps, villages, open camps, walking camps, vehicle interactive camps, arts support camps, department camps, staff camps and work support camps.

We wrote the review from “our” perspective, and “we” is not just the opinion of what he wrote. What it aims to do comes from the input of our community. Making this vision a reality is everyone’s responsibility. “We” means everyone.
We also wrote the perspective in the present tense. Some of what was written didn’t happen… This is what we really want. That’s where we’re going. Read this with your future glasses on.
For example, one of the main cultural concerns we heard was about plug and play or convenience camps. Shares a vision of where we want to be in the future around this issue. In the next phase of this project, the implementation team will focus on this topic to determine the right approach and test the criteria by which we evaluate warehouses with this perspective in mind. Just applying it to a burnt out person’s organization will not make the vision a reality. It will take all of us, individually and as a team, to make this a reality. We hope that you will actively guide the culture of this city that we all love so that it can develop positively and continue into the future.

When Larry Harvey wrote the 10 Principles in 2004, they were a description of a community’s ethos and culture that had been steadily evolving since the event’s inception. The comments we received on this vision relate to the 10 principles that define who we are as individuals and in the groups we call our communities. Today, the 10 principles remain the guiding principles of human ethics, and this vision fulfills them.
A Tragic Land That Was Devoured By The Sands’
Culture is our collective life experience. It’s not what you are, it’s what you do. When we create, contribute and participate in Black Rock City, it inspires others to do the same. Whether approaching Black Rock City as a customer or visitor, he encourages others to contribute and value the experience. Burning Man’s culture and Black Rock City’s success will always rest on the perception of our community’s shared cultural values.
As participants in Burning Man, our actions reflect the culture’s 10 principles and values. We have a rich cultural history that we as individual residents of the Black Rock City can enhance and strengthen. The actions of each individual collectively create the culture through which we experience our city.

We value differences and respect each other even if we don’t understand each other. We start from a place of curiosity. We practice learning and teaching about guilt and judgment. We don’t have to like or understand everyone, but we respect everyone’s right to express themselves.

As citizens of Black Rock City, we take personal responsibility – we don’t expect things to be done for us (culture of convenience) or ordered (we take responsibility for our culture). True fundamental confidence and participation cannot be outsourced, especially not through financial means.
Participation is our motto and it comes in all shapes and sizes. It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure they participate in the city’s culture.
Black Rock City is an inclusive community. Our city is a welcoming place for all diversity, including race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, ability, socio-economic, political and cultural background and other forms of identity. Black Rock City is a place where we all feel free to be who we want to be, express ourselves to the fullest, and respect other people’s expressions. We practice consent, look out for each other and respect personal boundaries. Everyone decides who they want at any time and what they want to say yes or no to. We help create a safe space for full self-expression, where harassment and sexual assault will not be tolerated.

We understand the urgent need. Black Rock City is a unique opportunity to get away from the tools and devices that shape our daily lives. We consider how the default habits of our world keep us in Black Rock City and actively work to practice ways of being together. We know that our actions, however small, make or break our culture.
We know who we are, what we do, and we own our history. We protect our culture from exploitation and stop the commodification of ourselves, our expression and society. We act as cultural ambassadors and guides for those exploring our community.
We understand that our community is collaborative and not based on transactions between users. We help with gifts of all sizes, shapes and types. The whole city itself is a collective gift of integrity and is only possible with the contribution of all citizens.
As Black Rock City Camps, our group activities demonstrate and teach the 10 principles and values of the culture. 10 principles are incorporated and reinforced in each camp.
