They are lucky with wealth, houses and guaranteed jobs, courtesy of the government; Migrant workers (mainly from the Indian subcontinent) are not so lucky. When I went in May, I flew Emirates and stayed at the new Raffles at the Palm Hotel. If you want to splurge, I recommend both.

I flew business class, then had the luxury of a driver from Edinburgh to Glasgow airport (and back, by the way, straight to my house). Saving money is enough of a hassle: a big plus.
The service in the Emirates airport lounge and on board is exemplary and the food is excellent. Western and Middle Eastern dishes can be found on the menu, it's like dining in a really fine restaurant and the drinks menu is equally appealing with fine wines and champagnes to accompany the food. Emirates is known for its service and I can definitely see why. There's also a choice of 5,000 channels for entertainment, so you won't be bored on a seven-and-a-half-hour flight.
Dubai Airport is another marvel. It is the busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic (90 million passengers annually) and the shopping experience is one of the best in the world with some real designer bargains.

They have a wide selection of room categories and all 389 are excellent, with excellent super king size beds, modern technology, showers, baths, double sinks and luxury toilets and large balconies. You will have your own caregiver who attends to your every need and is on call 24/7. Besides the classic rooms and suites, there are villas (high season US$11,000 per night) that sleep eight and are beyond WOW (now, officially, I'm beyond WOW). Each villa has a private pool and a full spa suite, with sauna, massage room and more.

The hotel's Ukrainian owner, Enver Mkhitaryan, personally went to the quarries to hand-pick the marble for the lobby area and insisted on importing fine white sand from the Maldives. I was put off by the thought of a restaurant that was half Italian. Half Japanese, but the Asian fusion mix worked very well and Sicilian chef Mauro Di Leo takes great pride in his ‘Itameshi' creations such as caviar risotto and wagyu beef. Matagi requires reservations, but it's worth it.
The beachfront Italian restaurant Piatti is as good as any Italian in London, and the Cinq Mondes Spa is a definite treat. I was lucky enough to have a skilled Thai masseuse who found the knots and left me very happy and relaxed.
Then there's the SOLA Raffles Jazz Lounge and a wonderful traditional afternoon tea served in Bluthner Hall, complete with live piano music.

There are so many impressive sights to see across Dubai, shopping to venture into and areas to explore, here are some top picks.
For an insight into the city's history, visit the museum at Al-Fahidi Fort. Built in the 18th century, it offers an insight into the local lifestyle and shows the remarkable changes that have taken place in Dubai in recent times.
The Satwa district, one of Dubai's Little India and Little Manila districts, is a great place for shopaholics to pick up gold and clothes, while Bur Dubai boasts many tourist attractions, from shops to floating restaurants. Deira is a lively commercial-residential district with old markets, many specializing in spices, while Jumeirah is a diverse neighborhood with easy access to the beach, beautiful villas; Walk and Jumeirah Mosque are the main attractions here.
The special thing about shopping in Dubai is that the actual shopping is actually average, but the experience is so OTT that you have to try it. Souq Madinat, inside the Madinat Jumeirah Hotel, has its own waterway to transfer people from shops to nearby hotels. The sprawling hub of the emirate boasts an indoor ski slope with real snow, and the magnificent Dubai Mall is the world's largest with more than 1,300 stores.
