Bhargav Maganti you just heard of is one of the co-founders of Monarch along with Igor Karlicic. Together, these two engineers are transforming football.
Through their company, Monarc, they created the Seeker, the world's first robotic quarterback that passes, punts and kicks. Thanks to Seeker, players who used to need a training partner can now train alone. They can do reps like a game on their own time.
Technology has already had an impact on some of the biggest football programs in the country. Monarc quickly became part of the cutting edge, leading the way into a technology-filled future for football.
There are a lot of cool things happening in the industry right now. The team that will be at the top will win in the years to come.

To kick off the season, I sat down with Bhargav Maganti and Igor Karlicic, co-founders of Monarc, the company behind the world's first robotic quarter.
It was nice talking to you both. Now, I'm interested. Are you all athletes? Do you both play soccer?
Bhargav and I used to play different sports in high school. Balgarf played tennis. I swim and play water polo. So of course there's an appreciation for the players and what they've been through, but it would be unfair to say we've had the same experience.

But are you a fan? Do you guys have big foam fingers and wave them around all the time during football?
We are now on our way. In fact, we have had the opportunity to work with many athletes at all levels. Now, yes. Yes. We are definitely fans.
Yes. So Igor and I met in 2008. We were champions at Northwestern and became friends early on. We all studied mechanical engineering, and we all spent a lot of time working in our engineering shops.
The reason we are best friends is because we share the same interest, oil and creativity. And we had a lot of teachers, a lot of classes, and it really pushed us to try to think outside the box and see ourselves as entrepreneurs in a logical way.

How did two young engineers running in the same circle, who were not football people at the time, decide to start a football-related company?
So at some point in our learning and development journey, we made a pact that we decided that one day we should start a company — we should build something really cool.
So new technologies began to emerge that focused on internalization. When we realized we could get the technology to track 30 times a second, we were hooked.
In the past, GPS was used in many sports, but when you have players running at 10 yards per second, GPS cannot be fast enough to understand what is happening.

So this idea really got Igor and I really wanted to follow Monarch full time and quit our jobs.
Now, for those of us who have never seen the Seeker and are trying to imagine what a robotic quarterback would look like, can you explain what it looks like and what it's made of?
Um, yes. Five ‘six' robots with a six-ball magazine, if you can guess. It weighs around 300+ pounds and is made of mostly steel and aluminum.
The lower part of the body has a screen that you can interact with. So it can rotate, rotate, rotate, whatever you want. And then you have two big rotors to throw over, full court.

Well, one of the main points we try to convey to our customers and users is that we offer a representation of the same games. The way we're able to do that is we have a device that's the size of a wearer that can be worn around their waist. With this, we can track where they are in the field. Now, it's just a distance. Keep your distance from the Seeker. But with this, you can think of different ways our robot can interact with the runner.
Well, that's one thing they have to do well, and it's hard to do well when you haven't caught any tickets during practice. To put this in perspective, we did some research while developing at the University of Iowa. We saw the third receiver catch just 20 passes in the entire week of practice. field representative. So you think about what that means for each individual, their education, their opportunities to advance, not only in their rosters, but in their careers, it's amazing.
So finally even for players who want to improve and understand the best way to hone their craft is to stick with them as much as possible. They really can't do it. This is where we really come in.
It really depends, but we've seen — we have one athlete, he's a high school player, and he has 1,000 catches every morning.

My goodness. Yes. Seeing that none of the assistant coaches could do it, [laughs] they threw them off their shoulders, and they fell to the ground.
So the problem goes both ways, right? So like you mentioned, there are more places to guard the ball and the guys practice dribbling than there are places to throw. But at the same time, quarterbacks need to reduce the number of times they throw. Otherwise their lives will be limited. So their careers really start where they are in high school and early college and the size of their throws. You see, at the NFL level, too many quarterbacks have shoulder or elbow problems right now. And that's all. So 100 to 150 practice throws, that's it for them. Well, that's it, you know, it's a two-way street.
As a result, Seeker looks less like a humanoid robot from a sci-fi movie and more like a cousin of the Curiosity rover on Mars. The hulking, 300-plus-pound robot has an antenna that tracks sensors worn by players on their laps.

As these guys say, one of the revelations of the Seeker is that it offers multiple reps for the receiver and kicker… while – at the same time – protecting the body from wear and tear on the quarterback and kicker.
Science on the long-term effects of playing soccer has put safety and security first. The operator does everything in its power to reduce overuse and unnecessary injuries … by making the gym manageable, efficient and productive.
They tested the Seeker multiple times and built nine physical versions before going public. Seekers weren't always the sophisticated machines they are today.
Can you tell us about some of the early versions of Seeker, when it may have been less sophisticated and less sophisticated?

Those early days were certainly very exciting for us. Basically, we learn everything from scratch. So Igor and I are both engineers, but we've never – nobody on the team has ever designed a robotic quarterback. So it starts from the bottom up.
In fact, as you can imagine, we had nine physical releases, followed by software iterations, before we released the product. We've done full resets over the years using some technique or method and then realized, you know what? There are better ways to do this.
