“Watching planetary nebulae has been my favorite since childhood. These bursts of ethereal gas are what are left of the sun as stars at the end of their lives and are a good lesson for our future because nothing lasting forever. The Griffiths Planetary Catalog was an idea that came to me because I enjoyed looking at these things and wanted to share the best with other viewers. Gary Imm's beautiful pictures of “Each nebula in the catalog is a wonderful example of his dedication and skill. I hope that generations will enjoy these beautiful images and remember them as they look at the Griffiths Planetary Catalog.”
Planetary nebulae (PN) are unique and mysterious objects that can be observed and imaged. Although other PNs are included in other well-known lists such as Messier and Caldwell, the first PN-focused list (to my knowledge) was recently developed by Martin Griffiths in his excellent book 2012, “Planetary Nebulae”. The Griffiths Planetary List contains 45 non-Messier PNs ranging from +82 to -24 declination. In his words, he chose this PN “to strike a balance between brightness, size and visibility by focusing on the most interesting and challenging nebulae that the author has personally seen over the years 40 of celestial research. 4 Messier PN objects are deliberately ignored.” Like the Messier and Caldwell lists, this list was developed primarily for visual observation, but all objects in this list also make excellent targets for astronomy.
My poster lists the items in order of GPL number from top left to bottom right. Griffiths calculated them by increasing the value of RA. I have shown each PN approximately to scale. Each PN image is accompanied by its original name, common nickname (if any), size (in arcseconds and light-years), size, distance (in thousands of years light), and decrease.

The technical details of PN are difficult to determine and vary from source to source. I extracted the dimensions from my drawing, which often ended up with a larger width than listed in Griffith's book. Maybe it's because my images capture larger galaxies, like the outer rings, that weren't visible to Griffith. Size information is from Griffith's book and distance information is from various sources.
I tried adding surface brightness as well. But that information varies greatly from source to source, and I have come to the conclusion that the brightness on these unusual objects is not a reliable parameter due to the natural variability of brightness across the everything.

NGC 6857 was originally thought to be a planetary nebula. But from 1970 there was a feeling that it was the domain of HII and not PN. In my opinion, the details of my picture of this object confirm that it is not a PN, as its shape is different from any other PN I have seen. Also, its size of 11 light-years is too large for a bright PN, and its distance of 30,000 light-years is about 2 times farther than the most distant PN. But I respect Griffiths' expertise, so I have this entry on the list.

There are 5 beautiful PNs a little further south, from -34 to -40 degrees declination: NGC 2818, NGC 3132, NGC 6302, NGC 6337 and NGC 6563. If your image location is I got to these PNs, they are the best things on this list.
