Seemingly a play-the-hit evolution of the popular 42mm pro-spec dive watch, the Pelagos 39 is smaller, smaller and lighter than its siblings. And those preparations are enough to make a big splash with our readers – and collectors around the world.

Over the past 10 years, more and more watch buyers, especially the most discerning (though not exclusively), have been asking for smaller watches. Or at least watches that are easy to wear every day. This means not too wide, not too far and certainly not too far from hatch to hatch. As today’s collectors have become fond of vintage watches, there is a growing interest in watches that are very close to the smaller models of the past. Panerai’s 45mm watch has room for more and more pieces from 40 to 43mm (give or take).
Many of us have gone with the 41mm Black Bay and 42mm Titan Pelagos. It looked like Tudor finally had its seafarer, and it didn’t look like a Rolex. All titanium, all matte, tons of lume, world-class bezel, helium escape valve, 500 meters of water resistance, and that self-correcting trick.
I’ve said it before, but gram for gram and spec for spec, the Pelagos is the best diving watch in the world – especially if you’re looking to dive. And I did it. I have spent many hours on various Pelagos models, including diving in Mexico in 2015.
But the truth is, just as off-road cars are more popular than off-road, diving watches are more popular than diving. Few of us divers and even fewer consider a watch as a supplement to a traditional dive computer. People buy dive watches for details they never need. Considering this opinion, I think that in the main meat of the dive site, Pelagos has always been a little bit more – size, price, specs, etc. – to the broad trade and well-planned appeal of Black Bay. Think of it this way: When you see a Rolex diving watch in the wild, how many divers are under the oceans and how many people live in the ocean?
Personally, no watch has managed to leave me on the fence more than the green Pelagos. I love the look, the feel, the hardcore specs, the titanium, the tension – everything. But, every time I try one, it feels too small on my wrist. If I wanted a watch like the Pelagos, I would wear it every day, all the time. And while at 42mm wide and 14.3mm thick it’s not a dive-worthy watch, the 50mm lug is long on my seven-inch wrist.
Like many of you, I was looking forward to a brief introduction to Pelagos. Okay, here it is. Pelagos 39 is Tudor’s first attempt to capture the general spirit of Pelagos, but it aligns closely with the appeal of Black Bay Fifty Eight.
Pelagos 39 is approaching the 10th anniversary of Pelagos and retains the original Titan bloodline. In those 10 years, the Pelagos family grew and evolved, with an internal movement and a blue variant in 2015, a left-hand-inspired reference (called Pelagos LHD) in 2016 and then a very different Pelagos. Given this precise generation and equipment, the Pelagos 39 represents the first evolution in the joint efforts to create a universal commercial appeal. Early iterations, with their stop-signal design language, self-adjusting bracelet mechanism and military-like mechanism have always been considered the most perfect and capable dive watches possible (given the unique nature of the FXD design).
In Pelagos 39, we see this format updated through the prism of Tudor’s current market success. We can follow the Pelagos beam as it enters and see where the Pelagos 39 exits, parting its way along the first beam.
Or to make a car analogy (hey, you saw the line), if the Pelagos is the conventional diesel Land Rover Defender L316, the Pelagos 39 is the new Defender L663: born from the same goals, but more. Current and different concerns are created. It’s a small device, and a little small, but without the other limitations that made the original a special offering.
So now, at about 800 words, we come to Pelagos 39. As we did in last week’s introductory post, let’s get the numbers out first. The Pelagos 39 is 39mm wide, 11.8mm thick, 47mm lug lie and weighs 107g at its smallest. The width of the lug is 21mm and the bracelet tapers to 16mm at the clasp. There is no helium escape valve, the caseback is closed, the crown screws down, and the water resistance is 200 meters.

With interest in this watch – including my own – I want to be clear about some limitations in my experience with the Pelagos 39. I have an hour in the office with a Tudor sampler. I couldn’t measure the bracelet, or try the watch on its rubber band. Also – even though I asked – Tudor doesn’t have a standard Pelagos available for direct comparison. my reasons
In person, the Pelagos 39 may look very different from the renderings and images provided by Tudor. I say “can” because it all depends on how he hits the rim. In the shadow or in low light, the bezel appears black and the grains from the brush, not much different from the matte bezel of its brother (see below). Add sunlight or a flash of photography, and the brush finish on the bezel reflects a ton of light and the bezel is brighter in tone and more reflective of the surrounding colors. It’s a completely new look for Pelagos.
The bezel looks ghostly, with a stark contrast between the gray of the bezel and the deep black of the dial. In a dark room, Pelagos 39 looks like a black Pelagos. In bright light it is very different. I really like the way the ceramic bezel insert meets the light, but it doesn’t have the clarity or gravitas of the usual matte bezels and standard Pelagos models.
On the wrist, or at least on my wrist, the Pelagos 39 is perfect. dream It has many features similar to the Black Bay Fifty-Eight but is slightly lighter and has a sharper and more modern presence. Bezel action is smooth, with a slight click of 60 rotations similar to any other Pelagos bezel I’ve tried. The crown, too, mimics the Pelagos series – strong and easy to control.

Even with a full string, the Pelagos 39 is light, but not to the point of feeling unstable or empty. From the bezel to the crown, the Pelagos 39 feels well-made and of a quality that matches what we’ve come to expect from the Pelagos line.
The bezel, like the hands and square hour markers, is completely luminous, which has always been one of my favorite things about Pelagos. When preparing the Pelagos 39 for a lume shot, I noticed that the marks on the hands and the bezel were slightly below average, as can be seen in the photo below.
The dial is a deep dark non-glossy that absorbs a lot of light, providing plenty of contrast and an almost matte finish to the bezel. With four lines that include the model’s signature red, the balance is perfect and the Pelagos 39 does not have a date window. Aesthetically, we also get a completely new bezel design, meaning a ring around the dial. Where standard Pelagos models have a three-sided design that wraps around the markers, the Pelagos 39 uses a traditional diagonal ring.
