The Literary Museum of Ireland (aka MoLI) was a delight and the Hugh Lane Gallery (which houses Francis Bacon’s complete and meticulous study) was absolutely stunning, but the real surprise treasure was the Chester Beatty Museum near the Castle of Dublin.
Named the European Museum of the Year in 2002, it houses an extensive collection of “manuscripts, miniature paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and some decorative arts from Persian, Islamic, East Asian and Western collections.” Chester Beatty is a of the main sources for the study of the Old and New Testaments and houses one of the most significant collections of Western, Islamic and East and Southeast Asian artifacts.”
For someone who loves books and history as much as I do, it was an absolute feast for the eyes and mind. Incredibly, there is a suggested donation of just €5 to enter, so this museum is an absolute must next time you find yourself in Dublin.
Last weekend we packed up the car and headed to Sally’s family’s coastal home on the south coast in Dunmore East. There was a little bluegrass festival going on in the three pubs in town, so we caught a few bands playing their Irish American twists, which was a real treat for this Nashville native!
