The traditional village of Romania has recently undergone incredible changes. The transfer of architectural styles from EU countries and the need to modernize houses, together with significant gaps in the legislation for the protection of built heritage, have radically changed traditional architecture and caused irreparable damage in terms of rural authenticity and landscape aesthetics. The purpose of this study is to analyze the need to preserve the existing traditional architecture in the city of Certese, which is seriously threatened by the import of postmodern elements. The opinion of both local residents and tourists on these aspects was evaluated by the survey method. The results revealed more conservative views of older residents who still adhere to traditional building styles, while younger respondents prefer more modern houses. Most tourists were also more interested in traditional architecture and criticized newly constructed buildings. The contrast between the old and the new, which is now intensifying in the region, remains an element of intergenerational negotiations and increases the risk of a decline in Certese cultural authenticity.
Traditional architecture is often undervalued and increasingly under threat in today's environment, although it is one of the main assets of rural communities, especially in terms of capitalizing on tourism. Many studies emphasize the importance of its preservation and development throughout the world [1, 2]. The success of a sustainable rural tourism policy in Romania depends on national and regional efforts to preserve the authentic architecture, traditions and customs that characterize its rural areas [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].
The ethnographic region of Sara-Oăşului is an example of a Romanian geographical region that is defined and developed by its cultural reality, especially in terms of customs and architecture. Unfortunately, globalization and modernity have somewhat overshadowed the traditional architectural elements. The area chosen as the study area is a clear example of this as it clearly demonstrates societal pressure to favor comfort over traditional building styles and materials. In addition, the needs of everyday life are known reasons for the change of traditionally built buildings [9]. Traditional country houses usually cost more money and effort due to older materials and construction methods that are harder to find and implement today. In addition, the younger generation perceives older houses as less functional and/or less aesthetically appealing [1]. That is why the villagers are in a difficult situation. On the one hand, they can now use new materials and styles in the construction of their homes to increase their comfort in accordance with modern living standards. However, on the other hand, the desire to revive traditions and/or ensure tourists' consumption of authentic cultural heritage forces them to keep the styles and materials of the houses they live in unchanged.
This article presents a case study of Chertese village in Sara Oashului on a topic of interest to the academic community, local authorities and tourism policy planners. It begins with a bibliographic review section that focuses on the subject in general and a specific view of its relationship to the research area, followed by a more detailed and descriptive analysis of the city of Certese. The last part describes the field research methodology and the survey conducted for this study, which uses an approach rarely seen in the specialist literature: obtaining a contrasting and complementary perspective of the endogenous (local) population and the foreign (tourist). The high cost of living and strict regulations on heritage buildings often create many inconveniences for people living in traditional houses. Therefore, some (especially young people) are tempted to leave them for more modern living conditions [15].
Tourism requires the preservation of the unique cultural heritage of the region, authentic rural landscapes and traditional village architecture. It is also an engine of economic diversification, development and modernization of the village [16]. Agritourism, in particular, develops from preserved rural houses and authentic farms [17]. Tourists visiting rural areas are looking for something different from the urban areas they come from, and traditional architecture, for example, remains an attractive element for them [18]. In fact, rural tourism becomes an opponent of the reconstruction of traditional houses, creates restrictions for urban planners in this area and often causes conflict situations at world heritage sites, but these difficulties are not necessarily limited to them [15, 19, 20, 21]. ]. , 22, 23]. When implementing modern standards of sustainable planning of rural tourism architecture, rural development projects should still take into account the natural and cultural landscape of the region and include it in materials and design [24, 25]. Internationally, traditional architecture is an important part of national heritage, and its preservation is a priority because it expresses the characteristics of a people's identity. It is also used as the main vector for attracting tourist flows and, therefore, as a tool for the economic development of the territory. Therefore, countries such as the Netherlands, Spain, the Republic of North Macedonia, France, Slovakia, Great Britain, Germany, Croatia and Italy have made significant efforts to preserve territories with traditional architecture [26, 27, 28, 29]. Measures taken in these countries aim to expand restoration methodologies in accordance with local customs and practices in order to recapitalize/promote sites that incorporate traditional elements. In addition, best practice recommendations include: technical solutions to reduce the impact of implementing urban grids; types of construction materials allowed for building reconstruction for each region of the country; develop training courses for workers involved in the rehabilitation of architectural monuments; and organize information campaigns on the importance of ethno-cultural heritage, targeting the local population as the main actor to ensure their survival and development [30, 31, 32].
