Spreading your civilization across the stars is what the expansion phase of any 4X space game is all about. In the Polaris sector, there are various planets to colonize, such as acidic, oceanic, desert, polluted, hot, volcanic, gas giant, dwarf, and not so much super-Earth. Each of the planets contains some of the 5 essential minerals that you need to collect and harvest to maintain your buildings and fleets. To mine the minerals, you have to colonize them, and depending on the type, that requires examining things like domes and platforms. Every planet and type of planet offers one or more of these resources, and the richness of the source gives you a sense of what kind of return you can expect when you start mining it. In theory this presents an interesting competition for resources that will have you scrambling for rich planets to keep in constant supply, but in practice I found it relatively easy to maintain a steady flow of them all.

The most important planets of all, and the ones you and all the races will rush to capture, are the Earth-like planets. While many other planet types exist, they are primarily sources of mining resources. Earth-like planets are where the action takes place.
