And I’m Joanne Freeman. That’s right, we’re in August and we’re at the time of year when people go on vacation. Even our producer, David, is taking time off and going on vacation. I congratulate him on the holiday. But because of that, we thought today would be the perfect time to talk about how Americans used to take vacations and go. And perhaps even more important, how the idea of traveling for leisure or entertainment or otherwise justified vacation time evolved over time.
Now it should be noted, and this is interesting because vacationing during a pandemic is an interesting topic in itself, that a survey conducted in April found that almost 3/4 of American adults have plans for summer vacations, which this is a huge leap. from last year when only around 53% had plans. And people are planning to spend a lot of money on those vacations this summer, partly because of inflation, but also because the travel industry is recovering. Of course, I’ve heard a lot of stories about overcrowded airports and pilot shortages and all kinds of things that happen because people are now coming back from travel and going on vacation.

But one thing that might be different this year for some people is that the holidays, not just early this year, but especially if people are going home for the holidays, one thing that might be different is not just mail electronics. but zoom and work platforms like Slack. For those on vacation, all of these can be available whether they stay on vacation at all or not. And I don’t know what I would do in such a situation, so it will be interesting to see how the idea of annual holidays develops.
Well, interestingly, the United States is the only developed economy that does not guarantee paid vacations and holidays. And it’s changing, of course, the way we think about vacations and the way we think about working during vacations, because you’re absolutely right, the idea of actually taking vacations is now foreign, I think, to a lot of people. re. from people
But the question arises, what is the benefit of rest? I can think of many reasons why someone would go on vacation. One is to easily distract your mind and body from your normal routine, another is to see the world and connect with different cultures, and the third is to learn new things. And these three things are not always compatible. And this begs the question of why anyone would choose to deviate from their normal routine.
Totally right. And I would say there’s a fourth reason that many people in early America, certainly in the late 18th century and early 19th century, justified going on vacation. And in a sense, the fourth reason is that it is not a holiday. People would say it’s for their health, not just to relax their mind or their body, but they actually go to hot springs or take hot springs and water, as you call it, to improve their health. And that was a very modern thing, especially in the south.

But if you think about what that meant back then, going to hot springs or mineral springs, and places like Virginia were really popular places to go, usually people who did that would be gone for weeks. Obviously, these were not typical jobbers. They probably owned land in the south. They will have plants. And for these weekly visits, they paid a lot of money. We’re not talking about the idea of a vacation for the average American at this point. It’s almost an aristocratic thing to do for a reason, not just for fun.
Well, when I think of early America, I always think of women complaining bitterly that a man works from sunup to sundown, but a woman’s work is never done. . And it wasn’t like you could leave the cows if you were lucky enough to have cows, because they had to be milked on their schedule. The thought of letting go of your routine actually meant you had money. But I have a question for you about water retention that I always wonder about. And it may sound really silly, but does that mean you should sit on them or drink them or both?

We have already set limits for those rich people. What I think about are the people, sometimes families, who go to Europe. And I don’t know, what does it look like?
