I think it was amazing, probably the longest wire camera I’ve ever done. And I want to thank you, Jared and Ari, for putting the podcast and Music Coach together. I remember well when you first brought up the idea of creating a podcast. And that’s when I was transitioning from being a modern musician and wearing all kinds of hats and doing everything myself, and we started building this amazing team. And you and Ari are two of the nicest people I know, and we started talking about this podcast idea. And that was the first time I left my baby, Modern Musician, and left the ball in your court.

And you two came out, you had a great podcast launch, it immediately went to number two on Apple Podcasts. And I said, “Wow, I should let you do more things more often.” I have to let Modern Musician go because our team is obviously amazing. And you guys in particular have embraced it and done a great job with the podcast. So I really appreciate you Jared and Ari and we will be in touch. So, you guys and our team as a whole and I want to share… I’m sorry. I’m totally confused here. But it is important.

In songwriting, it’s a really big moment that happened, but there were six or seven people who knew me and knew Modern Musician. One of them, especially when I introduced myself, he got a little scared. He said, “Oh my God! Michael Walker from the Modern Musician podcast?” And he never saw my face, except in the picture next to the piano notes. And now he’s listening to a podcast. And then he recognized my voice. And it was a great moment. They’re like, “Man, the podcast really touched a lot of people. And I think it helped a lot of people.” And really, you’re responsible for that, so thank you Jared and Ari.

Thank you man. It makes me so happy that you’re communicating in real life because I know we have an audience. I know people tune in every week. I am so excited because today I am with one of the most amazing people I know. He is a devoted father of three, a truly talented entrepreneur, an incredibly talented musician, and my personal mentor for the past five years. At the heart of the music industry, Neo is on a mission to help music artists at scale, bringing artists the tools, community, and training to help them reach their fans and make money doing what they do. Welcome to the Michael Walker, Contemporary Musician podcast.

Yes. Wow! That sounds good. It’s also kind of cool because I honestly feel like the roles could be completely reversed right now. I could interview you and it would be a great podcast. But it would be fun to take a step back and be a guest on the podcast today.

Yeah, man, it’s a lot of fun. So for the people who are watching or listening now and don’t know your full story, can you tell us a little bit about your upbringing and how you got to where you are today as a modern musician?

So I started touring full time right out of high school. And I realized very quickly that it wasn’t enough to just book the tour, you had to actually get people to the shows. And the first tour I remember a lot of shows and empty shows for the bartender in the back of the room. And at that time we were living in a van, sleeping in Walmart parking lots. And we’d go to Walmart and get a big pile of flour tortillas, a big jar of peanut butter, and peanut butter tortillas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. My parents would call me, “So, how’s the band going?” Like, “That’s cool. That’s cool.” But we were the definition of starving artists back then.

Grade 4 Grade 4 Wonders

And that changed everything, and we went from that point to selling 24,000 CDs in about six months, and when I look at my life personally and think about everything I’ve done in my entire life, it’s probably was the number one thing. .. And I am relatively young. I am 30 years old. But the first thing I ever did in my life was what our lead singer called tour hacking. And hack tours, in short, we noticed that our favorite bands All Time Low, Mini Parade, Blink-182 have millions of fans. And we grew up listening to their music and idolizing them. And for their shows they would go on tour and when they were on tour they would have thousands of fans before their shows or sometimes they would line up all day to see them.

And so we thought, what if we reach out to these people and introduce ourselves and share our music? And I was a very shy and awkward child, so it didn’t come naturally. I remember shaking and shaking as I walked towards people. But what we’ve found is that the people we’ve been talking to have been very receptive to it, because these fans go to the shows and try to support the music and really care. And then we sold 24,000 CDs with that in about six months. And because of that, one of the bands we’re competing with is All Time Low, our idols… I’m pretty sure the first song we sang as a band was All Time Low’s Dear Maria, Count Me In. ‘. . They heard what we were doing. And they gave us the opportunity to open for their upcoming tour. So this dream came true.

And that really turned into our career, where we toured and connected with a lot of our favorite bands. And finally, we released a number two album on iTunes. We had about 24 million streams.
