Yesterday our school was added to the list of schools to be closed. Like many other schools, teachers are asked to provide students with learning opportunities. Today I sat down to think. If you are in a similar situation and are looking for ways to help your students learn SWI vocabulary, maybe some of these tips will work for you. This list is not in order. As ideas come to me, I write them down.

1) One of the activities I want to do is “Word Bag”. We did this earlier this year as a group. Each group was given an envelope with a message inside asking them to draw a circle. They have to decide what is included in the circle and what is not. They had to write the short words to show that they understood the structure of the words in the circle and that they all shared the base. They also had a piece of paper to write down why there were a few words in the circle. As part of this, the developer must create their own word files. I will use this example to explain what I want. He pointed out that we do not use many words and there are others, not that they are appropriate, but that they are similar in some way without meaning or spelling. For many years, my students did not understand what structure brought about in spelling. Here’s a fun exercise!

They can do it with dust, but they can also do it with paper. They can also use Google Slides, Power Point, Prezi, or any other presentation tool to share their findings. I might be able to give them a chance to interact on Zoom with me and any other interested students!

Here is an example of small group work my students did last year when they chose a word together and researched it. They originally created these as podcasts, but we’ve expanded by adding images and creating videos. You may have a student who is happy to remove themselves, or involve their siblings or family!

5) Have them google what the brand is. Once they have a definition, they ask for examples of important words. There is a long and detailed list on Wikipedia. Ask them to read different collections to find what they like best. They wrote two words that became one. They may also collect pictures or make other pictures to show some of the words they have collected.

6) Google them is an oxymoron. When they define one, they try to come up with oxymoron examples, just like they did with the meaning. I want to combine this kind of learning, because they see the story of our language!

7) There are good things for students on YouTube. My students love looking at this Greek alphabet song. It is close to the Greek alphabet.

8)  Another great video from Erin McKean. The TED talk is called “Go Forward: Create New Words!” This is mostly because dictionaries reflect the people who use them rather than the power of how people use words. Also, it also conveys the idea that we can be happy with words.

9)  The last YouTube tip is any of Arika Okrenti’s posts. My students are fascinated by their visuals as much as the information shared. We tend to look twice because of this. Here is one example of what I mean. Youtube channel is full of videos!

10) Now what about writing! I would like to write a story or a poem at an unexpected pace. My students ignore the first draft, but what they write is always amazing! So that if the text is based on an earlier part or the base may be closed. They should not only open up their skills, but also strengthen their understanding of their chosen subject. I’ve done this before for science. Possible arguments are producers, meat-eaters, meat-eaters, meat-eaters, etc. Some spoke in general, some of particular animals, etc. They said who they were in the last line of their song.
