As we discussed in Part 1, we set goals in different ways. We don’t pick goals out of thin air or by comparison. We don’t do quick fixes or quick fixes that solve nothing.

If you’re new to us, you’re not late to the party! Here’s part 1 and part 2 for your reading (or listening!) pleasure.
STEP 7: What will you need to say YES to more often and what will you say no to in 2019 to move forward?
Make a list of the things you said YES and NO to in 2019. There is no wrong answer here, friends. Review everything you’ve written so far in this series and making your lists will be easy!
These lists are very important! When we say yes and no, we make a decision. Download My Free Yearly Intentional List Printable Below (Instant Download)!

In these lists you will find some of your goals for 2019 – they serve as an overview of where you are going and where you DO NOT want to go in the coming year.
STEP 8: This is where the magic happens! Read everything you’ve written so far and circle, highlight or paste anything that catches your attention. Look for common themes or themes in your text. Complete what you wrote if necessary. Get a bold, blended highlighter or bold pencil from here! Review what you have written so far and remember the topic.
(Note: many of you have asked which pens and highlighters we like. I use these , these , and these . I also use our sticker book to set goals, which I love!)
This step took me a good 25 minutes, FYI. I went back and read every word I wrote in making the PowerSheets and highlighted, circled, and pasted the things that stood out—the things that were most important to me and the things that kept coming back.
Ahh, Such A Beautiful View
Roots point to areas that are longing for development—areas of your life that are waiting to be changed.
What themes do you see in your writing so far? Maybe you’re following threads and think you’re missing something. Maybe the topics you see don’t seem “revolutionary”.
If that’s you, I hope what I’m saying makes sense: Lenses don’t have to be flashy and “big” to be powerful. However, they should be
Maybe you keep wanting a better system for the piles of paper in your home.

Maybe the idea of sitting around the table as a family a few nights a week comes to mind.
These are just as important as starting a new business or running a marathon. Why? Let’s take a deeper look and begin to uncover the bigger picture beneath the surface, the goals raised…
Our 7 year saga is the sweetest reminder of his faithfulness! I learned many things in the garden, but the biggest was confidence. Continue. Get busy. Keep believing.
Focusing on paperwork frees your mind to focus on more important things, and uncluttered surfaces allow you to cook dinner or create projects.

Knowing your neighbors can be a great local support system (and of course great for a cup of sugar too!).
Getting outside for fresh air and a brisk walk can give you the space and perspective to overcome challenges and make meaningful decisions.
Being there and turning off the phone at 9pm can lead to more connection with loved ones and better sleep, which makes it even better!

These little threads light your way forward. Pay attention to them. Record them. And take a shovel and dig.
STEP 9: Choose a word for 2019. When you look at everything you’ve written so far, what word comes to mind? What word most interests you and sums up what you want to focus on for the coming year?
First, I would like to list a few possible words that relate to me, even if I don’t think they are completely true.

Choose it as your word of the year, but that’s the beauty of the process! Going through the PowerSheets process and taking the time to write to you here, study the scriptures, and pray to know where the Lord wants me to go in 2019 has helped me see this clearly. Taking a slow and deliberate time to develop my goals, I removed the layers and found something unexpected.
How did I choose the heart? I went through everything I had written on the PowerSheets, identified a topic – or topics – and then pulled out a dictionary! Make a list of possibilities, then find each word’s definition, origin, and possible synonyms and antonyms. I also like to use BlueLetterBible.org to find Greek, Hebrew, and related scriptures. You might be surprised at what you find!
The heart kept looking for me, touched me and summed up everything I need to focus on in 2019.

. It doesn’t have to be perfect and you are free to change your mind later! (In PowerSheets, you’ll do a goal update every three months, because as we grow and change, so do our goals—no pressure!)
If you have something to say, I’d love for you to share it here in the comments. Give them to those who may have the same word as you – our common words are a must!
Write your 2019 word in important parts of your life. On days when you feel overwhelmed or need guidance, your diary will help you remember where you are going. This will keep you from getting distracted and lost. Write your word on a sticky note in your car. Put it on the inside of your fridge (I did!). Make it your phone lock screen or your desktop. Write it down anytime, anywhere to remind you where you’re going!
