Monday night I spent about 8 hours gathering H-alpha data and ended up throwing it all away because no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get proper focus even with a 10 second exposure. With the same projected field of view and nearly the same directional performance (about 1.1 arcsec RMS) as the night before, I had excellent focus with an OIII filter, stars and a good sharp subject.
I initially thought it might be an OIII vs Ha filter. Perhaps, just as refractors have trouble focusing on blue, red is difficult for SCT? But about a year ago data volume, camera, Ha filter, etc. it has really good stars and sharp subject (and i used it for my last picture).
Did PixInsight render the stellar FWHM perfectly Monday night? Some images have a FWHM of less than 1.0 arcsec.
PixInsight also displays the FWHM of all images from the past year, which are the same or worse than Monday night. But visually, it doesn’t even come close. Monday night’s stars are puffy and the object is hazy. I think FWHM is a good indicator of focus and vision? But maybe not in this case.
