This study explored the values that motivate the lives of residents of underserved minority communities to inform the development of community engagement strategies. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the main research questions: (1) what were the respondents’ values and (2) what did they think was important in their lives? Participants included twenty-seven ethnically diverse individuals living in low-income neighborhoods in New York City, New York. A thematic analysis was carried out to identify common themes and patterns relating to the values that participants considered important in their lives. Three broad themes were identified: (1) kindness; (2) universalism, (3) self-reference. kindness refers to a sense of belonging as the main meaning of life; This values-based community engagement strategy emphasizes concern for the well-being of our loved ones. Public engagement strategies that focus on universalists emphasize social justice, concern for the environment and the world. Finally, self-directed public participation strategies focus on satisfying participants’ needs for control, autonomy and mastery. This study presents a value-based framework for community-based research. It shows how the search for value is central to community-based approaches to public health research and can be an important first step in designing research that is more responsive to community needs and contexts. Such an approach works with community members to create a “research identity” that helps integrate their values into the project’s goals, thereby increasing community ownership and participation in the research.
