Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2014 9:18:56 ET Posted by: Jazzassin, West Sweden Thanks to everyone who made it possible to live locally again through another long-awaited summer of SD shows. Any comments are greatly appreciated! This was posted before I thought, but you can’t have too much of a good thing. Not the worst soloist Don I’d say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM13pdyn5JY Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2014 23:04:56 ET Posted by: Jim Taylor Hi, Baton Rouge I confess that when I was young I loved one who loved life itself. Until I heard Steely Dan. Good music. But young man, there’s nothing in the world right now… Date: Monday, September 29, 2014 9:17:18 PM ET Posted by: Moonpie, Vegas What do you think of The Who’s latest? the song “Be Lucky”? I hope to see you on the next trip. Roger encouraged me to fly to New York for a pure jazz show. My girlfriend used to live in New York and volunteer there after 9/11, so a trip during or after the holidays isn’t out of the question. Jon’s next album is also coming out next year, so he should have some features as well. BTW, I really like your thoughtful and thoughtful reviews…they are the bomb! Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2014 8:22:43 ET Posted By: Denise, Hinktown Thanks to everyone for reporting the final shows of this tour. I wish I could be with you all in NY. Date: Saturday, September 27, 2014 4:13:42 PM ET Posted by: Jim Taylor, Hello Baton Rouge Sorry for the length of this post, but I wanted to do a post trip post to summarize my experiences and feelings after an amazing. summer (Too many “posts” going on.) This is as much for my benefit, to summarize my adventures, as for the information of the SD community. I couldn’t think of a better place to put it all, so please move on if the details of my life aren’t funny… I’ll do this in chronological order. July 26, 2014: New Orleans – Drove to NOLA from Baton Rouge after replacing all the belts on my Accord. I was just going to change the oil, but the mechanic said it probably won’t go into the Geismar. I got a room in the Lower Ninth Ward, NOLA. There are still many sad abandoned neighborhoods. I expected to see more life in the area but it is still difficult to sled. I went to a really nice neighborhood restaurant in the Lakeview area called “The Munch Factory” where I had the best seafood I’ve ever had. And that’s saying something. Highly recommended for anyone going to Jazzfest next spring. It is close to the fair and accessible. UNO Lakefront Arena is a sports complex. I once saw Michael Jordan play there during his rookie season when the NBA played on a neutral court for a few regular season games. This was easily the biggest place I’ve been on this trip. I had a seat in the 4th row in front of Donald and the girls and even there I could hear the commotion down the aisle. The guy next to me came in with an iPad and a towel that he used to record the show. It was turned off about 30 minutes later. The highlight of the show was of course the “Pearl of the Quarter” which they released without fanfare. This was also the only show of the 6 that I saw where they started with “Your Gold Teeth”. They also presented “Green Earrings”. Fun show in a big city (of course, as a brother I’m biased). July 27, 2014: Birmingham- My plan was to drive straight to Birmingham, see the show and then drive straight to The House on the Gulf Coast to join the Fam for some R&R. I left the Days Inn in LNWNOLA and drove to B’Ham. As I drove into town I had an idea though so I drove down I-65 south of town and got a room. Good thing, because I got to try Jim and Nick’s Churrasco. Great ribs and full beans. I went to the original location, but now they are a chain with locations throughout the South, Mid-South and Mid-Atlantic (Carolina’s). The venue was the Concert Hall at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center. It’s right downtown and I just parked on the street a few blocks from the venue. It’s where the local symphony performs and I have to say it was the best sounding hall I’ve heard at a concert this summer. The sound was simply untouched! I sat in the 11th row next to Walter. Standouts were 2VN, who I’ve never heard live before, and a rousing version of Deacon Blues, who put on a light show for the locals on “They Call Alabama the Crimson Tide.” I thought it was a nice touch, continuing the theme of making something a local reference. The group was in top form. Walter and Donald seemed to enjoy the crowd’s appreciation. There are some high quality videos on YouTube of the start of the Birmingham show that I highly recommend: http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Steely+Dan+Birmingham+Cuban+Chant&FORM=VIRE4#view = detail&mid =3736013F3A25301C76973736013F3A25301C7697 . I left the next morning and drove to The House on the Gulf Coast and hung out with my family, played golf (not for free) and went out to dinner at “King Neptune’s” at Diane Sawyers with my girlfriend: http://www. kingneptuneseafoodrestaurant.com/. I have been going there for years and it never disappoints. Try the Fried Oyster Poboy. August 1, 2014: Nashville- Woke up at 3am. and left Gulf Shores for Nashville. It was hard work, but I arrived safely at my son’s apartment and slept. The venue was the Ryman Auditorium, which is right in the middle of 5th Avenue in Nashville. When I moved to Nashville in 1973, the Grand Ole Opry was at the Ryman. I was a student at Vanderbilt and went a few times, but at the time I thought it was tough. I wish I would have taken it a little more seriously because history was made. I went to the show with a 35 year old friend (my band played at her first wedding). She had never seen SD before. She’s well connected in the Nashville music industry and recently had a tragedy, so I bought her a ticket to cheer her up and get her out of there. She took me to The Southern Steak and Seafood on Third Ave., where we were treated to a wonderful selection of appetizers and seafood. The Ryman is an old-fashioned place. There are many obstructed views, especially along the right and left line of sight. The porch is supported by pillars that can also block the view. We were in the 12th row to the right of Donald and the girls and had a great view. My friend said halfway through the show, “those guys are so funny!” which is something we sometimes lose sight of here in the SD community. Again they played “Deacon Blues” and the show had the feel of “Greatest Hits Night”. But not Rikki. I had never heard Rikki live before, and I was expecting them to play the Ryman… Not to be… Security at the Ryman was almost fascist. People were kicked out for using cell phones or dancing in the hallway. It was really disappointing. After the show I met she who shall not be named, a lovely person who was said to have flown somewhere unnamed for the weekend shows. After the show, my old friend and I drove around for a while to see old places and then she dropped me off at my son’s house. As I got in, I realized I had left my iPhone in her car. Long story short, I finally contacted her on Face Book and picked her up the next morning. I took my daughter to lunch for Sushi and then met my son again for the Saturday show. August 2, 2014 Nashville- It was a very emotional night because of this
