I've made a lot of technical education tools that nobody wants to use. But in one weekend I built. A vibrant community soon gathered.
Along the way we all helped each other. Today, people all over the world are preparing for their first job in technology.

You can share it on social media. Sharing: “Check out this book I'm reading” and linking to it is a surprisingly effective way to convince yourself to read a book.

Were there computers in the grasslands of Africa, where ancient humans lived for thousands of years before spreading to Europe, Asia and the Americas?
Programming skills have not been an elective for over a millennium. Computers as we know them (desktops, laptops, smartphones) appeared in the 80s, 90s and 00s.
Yes, I think talent and passion play a role. But eventually those who want to become professional developers have to spend time at the keyboard.

I say all this because I will admit it: learning to code and getting a job as a developer is hard. And some have it harder than others because of circumstances.
I won't pretend that I've experienced real problems learning to code. Yes, I am 30 years old and have no official background in programming or computer science. But consider this:
I grew up in middle class America, a fourth generation American from an English speaking home. I went to university. My father went to university. And his father went to university. (His parents were farmers from Sweden.)

So this is my big warning to you: I am not the kind of person to encourage you to overcome adversity.
There are tons of people in the developer community who have overcome real difficulties. I will mention these people later in the book if you want to find their teachings.
I don't want to promote software development. I wouldn't paint a picture of a possible science fiction story if you learn to code.

Learning to code is very difficult. Getting a job as a programmer is even more difficult. But for many it is worth the effort.
Coding is a very rewarding, intellectual and creative field. You have a clear career path ahead of you: senior developers, technical managers, engineering managers, CTOs and even CEOs.

Attend technical meetings and conferences. Travel if necessary. (Most of your budget for learning to code should go to tickets and events – not books and courses.)
