After lunch it became a bit more difficult and we went up to 3800 meters above sea level to the village of Wakawasi where we would spend our first night. As we went up, the views kept getting better.
Wakawasi is a small village in a valley just above a point where you can grow anything but potatoes. Residents still live a very traditional life, from clothing to agriculture, family structure and home. They allow travelers to camp in the village for a small fee. We had brought gifts for the kids and our guide Raul spread the word that we would be giving out hot chocolate and gifts later that night. I have never seen more excited children in my life.

We distributed pencils, notebooks and bread (a luxury at a height where no wheat grows). Perhaps the sweetest thing I ever saw was a little girl gathering bread on her lap to share with her mother later. Cliché warning: hanging out with these guys gave me some serious perspective.
We didn’t get much sleep that night as the temperature dropped below zero and our camp was lucky enough to host the royal howling of stray dogs all night long. But regardless, we were up at 6am for breakfast (another epic feast) and a quick tour of one of the local family’s houses. The typical family house is a one-room building with mud bricks and a thatched or tin roof. Cooking, sleeping and socializing all happen in one room, heated by a wood/lama stove. And don’t forget the future roommates/meals, family pigs. Today, most of the men in the city work as porters on various trips, while the women are responsible for the household, children, agriculture and animal husbandry. Day 2 was the hardest day of the trek as we were looking at the summit which sits at a chilly 4600 meters above sea level. It was just us and the mountains, except for a few local farmers and a whole herd of llamas and sheep.
After another delicious meal from Chef Mario at our lakeside lunch spot, it was a few easy hours before I descended to our campsite for the second night, where I would survive the coldest night I’ve ever been. I once wore 8 layers of clothes. Not even a nice pot of matcha tea (aka spicy fruit tea, with a whole bottle of rum – delicious) could save me. Although the stars were distracting enough – it’s hard to put into words what the night sky looks like, miles away from civilization at 4,300 meters above sea level.

Fortunately, the cold wind cleared in the morning and we crawled out of our ice-covered tents for a glorious sunny day and the easiest day of walking yet: downhill, back to the Sacred Valley and civilization.
As we descended, the temperature warmed up and we saw more trees as Raul taught us about the history of the Incas and the Spanish conquest. When the town arrived and lunch, the path turned into a stream. But as Raul was so fond of telling us gringos, “It’s all part of the experience.”
Our last lunch was probably my favorite meal of the trip. We shared the yard with toddlers, kittens, dogs and a chicken that looked like it had tassels – but the real highlight was the soccer field. This led to a gringo vs goalies game where I managed to score 2 goals before almost collapsing after a 3 day hike at 3000m above sea level. Beautiful afternoon
We all got back on the van to travel to Ollantaytambo where we would catch the train to Machu Picchu. We had enough time to go to a corner and try some chicha (homemade corn alcohol fermented in giant barrels by the locals), which was actually very tasty (like a low-alcohol beer with a weird aftertaste) and then you take . Then it was on the train to Aguas Calientes (aka Machu Picchu base camp) for a night in a hotel, which after 2 freezing nights in our tent seemed like heaven on earth.
Getting up at 4:30am to catch one of the first buses up the hill was definitely worth it – Machu Picchu is busier than Disneyland and we were able to get some photos of the empty ruins before the crowds descended.
See that big peak behind the ruins? This is Waynapicchu. Sean and I decided to climb it…and it’s as steep as it sounds. But it’s worth climbing the thigh-high stairs, climbing the side of a mountain for 45 minutes, when you get a view like this:
None of us are afraid of heights, but sometimes at Waynapicchu you are literally on the edge of a precipice, with no railing or view in sight. It’s so intense… and absolutely amazing.

After the walk/flirt with death our most amazing guide Raul gave us a personal tour of the ruins. However, by then it was Saturday afternoon and Costco was busier, so we didn’t spend as much time as we could have. Those early moments of calm in the morning really stood out.
Machu Picchu is buzzing for a reason – it’s absolutely breathtaking (and you don’t have to walk, an easy bus and train will get you there from Cusco). It deserves a place at the top of someone’s bucket list, and I’m so glad I could cross it off mine.
