In fact, construction is already underway on the Shimao Intercontinental Hotel in Shanghai's Changjiang District—a five-star, 19-story, 380-room luxury hotel built in an abandoned mine, partially flooded.
Multidisciplinary engineering and design consultancy Atkins, which donned the architect, construction and civil engineering hats, told us that through the design and construction of the project, the hotel is part of a large resort, for adrenaline-hungry extreme sports enthusiasts – pocket money, at least.
And the conceptual image shows that the hotel can prove to be big enough for its customers. The surface of the hotel embraces the surface of the quarry, from convex to hollow. The separate outer building (entrance lobby) resembles a flying saucer descending into the quarry.
Instead of draining the water from the mine, the idea seems to be to collect it and sink it into an artificial lake. Two floors of the hotel and the guest rooms and restaurant will be under water. The pièce de résistance is definitely the waterfall that falls in front of the hotel facade and into the mine – at least in concept. One always wonders if the most beautiful design elements can survive the horrific value development process.

Atkins demonstrated several aspects of the design that appear to be environmentally friendly. The design includes a “green roof and use of our site's geothermal heat to generate electricity and heat. A naturally lit interior atrium integrates the existing stone surface with waterfalls and green vegetation.” It is welcome to add heat and electricity to the site, but unless the numbers are set against their contribution it is impossible to estimate how valuable the contribution will be.
Shanghai Shimao Property Group has so far invested $555 million in the entire resort, and hotel rooms are expected to start at $320 a night, according to Shanghaiist.
