Heartbreaking shit. I had a hard time suspending my disbelief that it was *impossible* to escape the bathroom after the tornado was over, especially considering the way it all ended. That said, I like horror based on elements of isolation and confinement, so I was (mostly) willing to put all that aside and enjoy the absolute fucking mayhem. Honestly, it’s not bad for a novel and I think the story has the potential to translate very well to the screen for the next film. 3.5 stars (cw: casual racism, reference to self-harm, attempted suicide, alcoholism, loss of a loved one, cannibalism, murder)

No. Scene Changes. It takes a certain level of genius to create a story that takes place in the bathroom. It doesn’t matter if it’s comedy or horror. Of course, a story has many scene changes. The environment itself is like a character: the protagonists interact with the environment, it creates the atmosphere, creates the atmosphere, provides motivation for the movement of the characters (they climb the stairs, throw themselves on the branch of a tree, summer sunlight). or the cold of a winter moon) So when Max Booth III confines himself and his characters to the confines of a basic bathroom, that’s an abdication of almost everything a writer touches to advance the story. A low-level threat to your emotions as you watch a family fade away in a surprising and disturbing ending. Did you enjoy it? I mean, enjoyment is the wrong word. I can’t say I enjoyed experiencing everything Max did to these characters. I was highly invested in one of them and knew that halfway through there would be some sacrifice. Pain and suffering. So enjoyment is the wrong word. I endured it. I respect him. And it further reinforced to me that Max Booth III is one of the most talented horror writers working in the industry right now. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING he submits.
This book has been on my wish list for a long time. I had no idea what it was about because I had never read trash, but the cover piqued my interest. After receiving the copy, I found out that there is also a film. Here are my thoughts after reading/watching both in one day. disappointed Disappointment plain and simple. It started off great. Max’s writing was excellent and I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next. However, for 80 percent of the book, nothing happens except for the occasional fart and joke. The gore was basic, and could have read better, so I didn’t like that, and the characters felt like a bunch of idiots (which they were supposed to be). The ending was good, but it left us hanging, which is also good because I like this kind of ending. General disappointment. All this time I imagined that the bathroom was small but when I saw the movie it was really big.
When I was a kid I went through Hurricane Marilyn in the Virgin Islands and when it was really bad at night I stayed with my parents, grandfather and sister in my grandparents bathroom just as the hurricane went out. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. This truly gripping novel brought back many of those memories as it takes place entirely in a bathroom after a family from Texas takes refuge there when a massive storm hits their town. The story begins quite slowly, with little tension between the family and discomfort with the circumstances. But soon, things get more surreal and scarier. As the time in the bathroom grew, Booth’s writing provided a palpable discomfort where you weren’t sure what was real and what wasn’t. I don’t want to go into too much detail as it’s best to go in blind for the events here to have maximum impact, but I read a lot of it with a real sense of dread as I began to feel the claustrophobia, the smell . the smells, and once things started getting really crazy, I started reading all of this with puffy eyes. Has anything like this happened in history? Some of them may have. Some of them may not. Based on how horrible this was, I hope it all turns out to be a bad nightmare for the main character. Stick a dysfunctional family in a tiny bathroom for a week and see how healthy they come out the other end. This is a page changer. I felt left out all the time. I had to know how it was going to end and I thought the ending was perfection.

I started this book in one go! It’s a dark and twisted story of a family trapped in their bathroom after a storm. The scene quickly devolves into madness, much to our reading pleasure.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator was fantastic and did a great job. I thought it was creepy, atmospheric and claustrophobic. It was short and sweet. I liked it. A dysfunctional family gets trapped in their bathroom during a tornado. The ending drama is crazy.
Great premise, but quickly goes off the rails. Realistic parts don’t make sense (just remove the bathroom door hinges). The hallucinatory/supernatural parts get tiresome. A copy is needed. It is not satisfying that it does not end.
4.5 stars I have no words for the level of mental stupidity served up by the author. All I can say is that Max Booth III totally understood the assignment and gave me a grade!

5 stars A bleak horror novel set in a location that took full advantage of its limited scope for grandeur, my favorite genre of horror stories often involves a degradation of the human psyche, and We’ve Got to Do Something is right down the road from front page, introducing a dysfunctional family already hanging by a thread even before we are horrified at their increasingly desperate situation. We Must Do Something strikes the perfect balance between ambiguity and clarity. The immediate outcome of the family members is clear, but what happens in the world beyond their confined space is completely open to interpretation. Depending on how you interpret the more surreal elements (all of which are disturbing in the best possible way), this could be a simple story of survival gone wrong, or something more outlandish and sinister. Perfectly paced and not holding back on ugliness of any kind, We Need to Do Something isn’t a ‘fun’ horror, it’s emotionally draining, stressful and desperate, yet so perfectly captured. Be sure to read the author’s epilogue at the end: 2020 has been a difficult year for many people and I can see that writing this novel during that time must have been a cathartic exercise.
