Antique chests are one of those things that can be easily found secondhand. They are available through online markets, garage sales, thrift stores, and anywhere that sells vintage. They have a certain style on them with all the treasures, hardware and styles. Every time I get one, I wonder where it will go and what it will be like to use it.
We recently found one at a local thrift store for $6.99, which is a hot deal! For less than $10, we couldn’t pass it up and we had to do something about it. Our classic chest is smaller than many of the chests around, but has a flat top, so naturally I think of a coffee table.
Our chest was someone’s DIY project that went wrong. Somewhere along the way, he was tortured with cheap paintbrushes and white paint. It was clear that after one class, the project wasn’t what they wanted it to be. They tried to keep the paint off the hardware but their colorway wasn’t the best and I guess they gave up and gave it away. If not painted, I will preserve and finish to make the natural wood color. But since it is already painted, the time consuming will be too great, so we will paint it properly.

Our first step is to lightly polish everything. I used 100 grit sandpaper on a random orbital sander to remove the peeling paint and roughen the surface for a fresh coat of paint. I let the polisher hit the wood and hardware and discovered that the outer canvas of this chest was still intact!
Next, we need a way to raise the chest up to the height of the coffee table. I found some small table legs with bolts ready to screw into the project.
Now we are ready to draw everything. For this project, I wanted a “shabby chic” chalk paint look. I chose Rust-Oleum 2X Heirloom White in Satin. This spray paint provides excellent coverage while providing a beautiful finish. When using spray paint, make long, even strokes and paint in light coats.
