How To Make A Square Coffee Table – Happy Wednesday everyone! I am so excited to finally share the details of our DIY Railing Coffee Table. This was our first construction project and I’m happy with how it turned out. When I was looking for a coffee table to buy, I immediately fell in love with the Restoration Hardware Balustrade Coffee Table. The only problem was that it cost $1,495, which was way more than I wanted to spend. However, when I came across Jenn Woodhouse’s tutorial and Anna White’s building plans on how to build a coffee table-like version from Restoration Hardware, I literally jumped up and down and couldn’t wait to get started on this project. I will share a link to his building plans at the bottom because they are the reason I created this beauty! I also modified his original plans to build a rectangular coffee table and made my square coffee table 38.5″ x 38.5″ and a little taller, so if you’re interested in the rectangular version, be sure to check it out his plans.
As I said before, this was our first building project, so I can honestly say that this is a great project for beginners who want to try building something for the first time. This project took us a few weeks, but only because it was spread over many nights of the week. It took about 7 hours to build and then another 5 hours to do all the sanding and coloring. This was my first time sanding or staining anything, so for people more familiar with those two, this time could definitely be cut.

Cutting List: I did all my cutting at Lowes. At $0.25 per cut it was much easier to do there.

Let’s start by saying that there are a LOT of kreg jig holes that need to be drilled in this project, so I just wanted to show you our little set of how we drilled them. We did all of this in the unfinished part of our basement since it’s winter outside and used a vise to secure the kreg jig to both the wood and the worktop in shifts so the wood wouldn’t move while we dug. Paul was still helping me hold the wood as I pressed every single hole on the Kreg Jig. I had never used a drill before so after I finished drilling each hole I felt like Wonder Woman/Ms. Independent.
We started by assembling the underside of the coffee table by connecting (7) 1 x 6 @ 38.5″ pieces of wood with 3/4″ pocket holes and 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws. wood glue and apply only a thin layer of glue. I used a fondant brush to spread it evenly. We drilled 5 Kreg Jig holes for each board. To ensure everything lined up correctly, we used both a square and extra pieces of wood on the sides to we are sure that everything is in place.
This is what the underside of the table bottom looks like after drilling the pocket hole screw. (Note: Be sure to alternate the pocket holes to prevent the boards from breaking.)

Now use (2) 2 x 4 @ 38.5″ and (2) 2 x 4 @ 31.5″ to create the square base below. Attach the 2 x 4s using the 2-inch wood nails.
Attach (4) 2 x 4 @ 3.5″ to the corners of the bottom base to create the coffee table legs using wood glue and 2″ wood nails. We originally tried using 1 x 4″, but the wood split when we tried to attach them. (Note: Drill a pilot hole in the center of the wood before drilling the wood screw to prevent the wood from splitting)
Now for the semi-tricky part: hit the nice spots with the blocks. The way we did this was to attach the underside of the post to a block using a flux brush and wood glue. Once we’ve both agreed the spot is centered, we put a dumbbell on it and let it dry overnight (Yes, I only use a 10lb dumbbell when I work out and yes, I know that means I’m pretty skinny). After the glue dried overnight, we flipped it over and secured it in place with a 2-inch wood screw.

To secure the other side of the block, I used Anna White’s trick of using clamps and extra pieces of wood to make sure everything lined up. After the glue was half dry, we released the clamp and placed a weight to make things slide. After the glue dries, use a 2-inch wood screw to secure the block in place. You should now have 4 beautiful legs that are ready!
Position the legs 1″ from the sides and ends and use wood glue to secure the legs in place. We then placed weights on top to keep things from wobbling. Before gluing the legs to the table, we also used (4) 2 x 4 @ 25.5″ guide aprons to make sure the aprons fit.
After the glue dries, flip the table over to attach the legs to the underside of the coffee table using 2-inch wood screws.

The countersunk nail is where we inserted the 2″ wood screws to secure the legs to the bottom of the table.
We have already built the table top using (7) 2 x 6 @ 27.5″ and (2) 2 x 6 @ 38.5″. Secure the wood pieces together using wood glue, 1 1/4″ pocket holes, and 2/12″ pocket hole screws. On the center boards we used 4 pocket holes and on the side boards we used a total of 14 pocket holes per board by drilling double pocket holes. (Note: When gluing wood together, try not to get the glue on the top of the table. If it seeps and settles on the top, be sure to clean it off while the glue is still wet. Dried wood glue does not stain, which is a problem when you get to the coloring part of this project. To prevent this from happening, I like to use a flow brush to apply a thin layer of glue to keep the glue from blowing over the edge. )
Now attach the (4) 2 x 4 @ 25.5″ aprons to the top of the legs. Attach the aprons to the inside corners using 1 1/2″ pocket holes and 2 1/2″ pocket holes at the top of We used also clamps and a level to make sure everything is level.

Attach the countertop to the apron using 2-inch wood screws and drill the screws from the bottom into the apron and up. Now make a happy mask because the table is fully built! !
Now for the very boring part of the whole project which is the sanding and staining aspect. I did the whole part of the project myself and it was frustrating at times (only because it was my first time sanding or staining)! At least it gave me a lot of practice for future projects.
First I sanded the entire top and bottom with my Ryobi orbital sander. First I sanded it with 120 grit sandpaper. To make sure I was sanding everything evenly I made light pencil marks on the top and bottom so I knew I was removing the same amount of wood on top (I want to be able to say I made this one up genius fool but of course like everything else I found it on Youtube). Make sure you keep moving the orbital sander randomly so you don’t create uneven holes. After using the 120 sanding disc, I went back with the 150 sanding disc, then the 180 and finished with the 220. The 220 sanding disc is what really gives the table that smooth, almost buttery feel! Since I couldn’t use the orbital sander on the side, I used 180 and 220 grit sanding blocks. After everything was sanded, I cleaned it up and removed all the sanding residue.
