How To Make A Wooden Rocking Chair Stop Squeaking – I hope everyone had a better Independence Day than we did. Four of my five kids came down with really high fevers over the holiday weekend, so we just stayed home and lost everything. Big Bang – no fireworks, no picnics, no slumber parties. But at least we’re finally up! One thing I did manage to do was redo an old rocker. I don’t claim to be a professional, but I am a self-taught furniture upholstery fanatic. My great uncle and grandfather were in this business and although I have never been able to copy it, I can only say that it is in my blood.

I found this beautiful curved chair at a yard sale and the lady said it was her grandmother’s chair. He hated to part with it because it was so comfortable, but like a newlywed couple combining furniture, it could only go so far.

The existing upholstery fabric had a sort of tribal sheen, but it was old and dirty and the wood finish needed some work.

Nursery Rocking Chair Makeover

As with most upholstery projects, you’ll need to remove the old upholstery first. I prefer to use a small gripper that allows me to grab the nail heads and clamps without destroying the wood. You need to keep the wood intact as much as possible to accommodate the new brackets/nails you are introducing.

When the stuffing is gone, be sure to save the stuffing, stuffing, and scraps of fabric, because you’ll need them soon. You may want to mark the pieces so you know which piece goes where (ie back, front, seat). I like to upholster with matching pieces of the removed upholstery to keep it straight…unless some kid decides to make a bed out of it.

You are now reduced to the bones of a chair. My chair had all internal parts in mostly excellent condition. However, this is not always the case when trying to reupholster an old chair. Sometimes you misalign springs or need to replace the belt.

Instructions To Fix A Squeaky Rocking Chair

This lumbar support on the back of the chair had straps that were still attached on one side but had to be refloated on the other side. I just added some staples and some original nails that were punched out. It is recommended to have a padding hammer (smaller head than an ordinary household hammer). It needs to be padded so you don’t bump into the frame when you’re trying to drive a tiny nail. I found mine during a junkyard once… I was so excited!

ADVICE. Use pliers to hold the nail so you can hit it with a hammer instead of your fingers!!

I love seeing woodwork restored to its former glory. But it tells me to paint it. To do this, you need to polish all the imperfections. It also gives the wood some “teeth” for the paint to adhere to.

Fixing Squeaky Wooden Glider Rocking Chairs

I used a power sander for larger imperfections and hand sanded for pits. Usually only fine paper is needed, such as 180 or finer (the higher the number, the smaller the grain, giving a finer finish)

Rocking chairs are a favorite in every home; the perfect place to relax after a busy day at work. In addition to being extremely relaxing, a rocking chair has many health benefits. But over time, parts of the seat loosen and the result is an irritating squeak; Fortunately, there are easy-to-fix solutions for dealing with noise. Before taking your chair in for repair or throwing it away, try these simple tips, it only takes a few minutes to fix a squeaky rocking chair.

The Strongest Outdoor Rocking Chair

To repair a rocking chair, you must first identify the source of the noise. Have someone sit on the chair and examine it, check the main pins and joints. Is the noise coming from the chair or the floor beneath it? You’ll notice that the chair doesn’t make a sound when it stops because the creaking comes when the parts rub against each other. In most cases, the noise comes from the junction of the curved handles on the floor and the wooden bars that fit into the holes on it.

Turn the seat to access loose parts. Tighten any loose screws with a screwdriver just as you would turn a wrench with a screw. Loose nails can be treated in several ways. You can use wood glue for the joints; it expands as it dries and eliminates squeaking. Apply a small amount to the area and be sure to wipe off the excess with a cloth soaked in hot water or it will leave marks on the chair. Wood glue comes in an injection-molded dispenser and is readily available at hardware stores. Similarly, paraffin can be used to glue loose parts.

The cracking noise of the joints can be solved by lubrication. You can use regular non-stick cooking oil, it is cheaper and gives the same result as other oils. It is more convenient to use cooking oil spray to lubricate the joints. You can also try putting melted candle wax on the joint. If that doesn’t solve the problem, pour Murphy’s oil on a soapy cloth and rub it into the creaky wood. Spray steel hinges and other metal parts with WD-40. Sometimes the squeaking can be caused by the spring under the seat, you can lubricate it the same way.

Another quick fix is to use talcum powder to get rid of the noise. This is especially useful if the chair is not on a carpet or rug. On hard floors such as wood, tile, and other floors, creaking can occur due to the friction between the chair and the hard floor. You can eliminate this friction by sprinkling powder on the floor under the chair. Also, rubbing some powder over the joints of the chair will prevent creaking noises in the future.

Often the noise can be caused by the card. Step on each tile to find the source of the noise. If the cause is a loose plate, strengthen the plate with a screw or nail, you can also use wood glue to tighten it. If that still doesn’t solve the squeaking, you can try putting a rug or mat under the seat, this will help reduce friction. If that doesn’t work so well, your only option is to move the chair to another location.

If the chair has old rusty parts, consider replacing them in addition to the instructions mentioned above. For all other cracks in the chair, wood glue works well. Follow these simple tips to keep your favorite rocking chair noise-free. No need to store it in the basement anymore, take it to the balcony and enjoy a warm afternoon!
