How To Make A Wing Chair Slipcover – I’ve always loved that back seat with its classic styling and flame stitched upholstery. It looked great in our last home, but our new home is more relaxed. A hood seems like a great solution. I have some sewing skills but have never tried anything like a quilt. This was out of my league until I came across Mustard Mustard’s video tutorial. I am a visual learner and they were exactly what I needed.
The lessons are divided into six parts, each of which has many tips. Marian also gives great encouragement. If you’re thinking of giving the cover a try, I recommend these step-by-step videos. One of Marian’s tips is to make your first cover with fabric. They are cheap and durable and that’s exactly what I did. The total cost of this project was less than $20.

Marian suggests putting a new needle in your machine and having extra needles on hand, and I’m so glad I listened. I used a Schmetz denim/jeans needle. They penetrate most fabrics quickly and easily. I had to change the needle at the end of the project. So they can fade faster.

I cut 2 1/2 inch strips of yarn down the center length of the drawn fabric. The curves around the arm were difficult to cut on the bias, but I used a lot of pins and that helped a bit.
I used Dritz Overlay Buttons – size 45. The button is a good size – 1 1/8″. On the back of the package is a circular template that you can cut out. Place the template on the button fabric. Cut the fabric. Center the button on the cover loops of the fabric and working from side to side and top to bottom, stretch the fabric over the tooth and secure it. Press the button until the fabric is smooth and tight. If you are happy with the look of the front of the button press the back panel onto the button cover. They are also suitable for pillows and clothes.
To cover the fabric loop, I cut a 1″ x 7″ piece of the same fabric. Press each side 1/4″ toward the center. Bring the outer edges together, line up the folded edges and sew together. Sew along the outer edge. You will end up with a finished 1/4″ x 7″ loop.

BACK TO READING: I’ve heard from several readers that the type of fabric you buy is important. I didn’t know that because I’ve only used this brand on Amazon. Some brands go from gray to white.
UPDATE PART TWO: Thanks to Laurie, a wonderful reader of my blog, I now know why some brands don’t go white. The fabrics I recommend on Amazon are 100% cotton, so they are washable. Some brands are made of 50% polyester, so they are not shiny. I knew people had problems with other brands, but now I know why!

This is not a quick process. You’ll want your seat next to the sewing machine so you can sit back and forth to make sure everything is just right.
I used the zipper foot to get the needle as close to the thread as possible without sewing it.

I cut pieces for the outside and inside of the skirt, two pieces for the back, two pieces for the arms, two pieces for the front of the arms, two pieces for the outer bottom, one piece for the front apron, and one a large piece for the front back seat (if that makes any sense).

I attached the two back pieces together and attached them (right sides together) to the back piece.
It is very important that the back of the seat is flat and solid. It will be more visible in the finished cover.
Following the lines and seams of the original seat, I attached the outer parts of the wings to the back and the inner parts of the wings, which I also attached to the front of the seat.

You can see how many pins I used in the process. I wanted to make sure they were following the track, that it was correct.
Sometimes things can seem superficial, but if you pull them with something else, they can emerge.
I realized I didn’t have enough bleached fabric to complete my project, so I used unbleached fabric for the part that hides under the pillow.

In the photo below, notice how all of my cover stitching matches the original seat stitching.
After completing the bulk of the cover, I added a bead and piping to the bottom edge to finish it off.
To make the pattern, I traced the pillow shape onto the stretch fabric, leaving about half an inch on all sides for the seam allowance.

For the bottom of the pillow, I cut two pieces that go over the top of each pillow to fit inside.
I also cut a long strip that ran around the center of the pillow to connect the top and bottom and join the piping in the middle.
If you are thinking of trying this, I encourage you to do so! As long as you take it slow and check yourself often, you’ll be fine.

Pull it (right side down) over the seat to make sure it almost touches the rear floor, touches the seat, and almost touches the front floor. I determined the required width and cut it to length.
