How To Build A Diy Nightstand
One of the best things about building your own furniture is that you’re not limited to standard heights. Most bedside tables you can buy in stores are between 24 and 26 inches tall.
But the mattresses got thicker and the beds got higher. So, these bedside tables are very small next to the bed, which makes it difficult to find items on the bedside table.
Your bedside tables should be the same height as your mattress, an inch or two. Makes it easy to carry essentials while in bed.

So I made these bedside tables so they wouldn’t fit next to tall modern mattresses. They stand 28 3/4 inches tall! Plus, it means you have plenty of storage space in your bedroom.
We use our bedside tables as charging stations for electronics. This includes our phones, tablets, headphones and more. But those ropes and bags really hit the table.
So for these bedside tables I designed them with a second shelf! Now all the stuffing will still happen, but the table is clean and clear. Or at least I’m ready to decorate properly.

But I wanted to feel like the extra shelf had a purpose, rather than leaving the third drawer out of the plans.
This idea went through several designs before getting it right. The top and shelf are slightly extended from the bottom of the bedside table. And the sides are built with pieces like corbels.
Now it looks like the shelf went first! And the open sides of the shelf make it easy to access your charging devices if needed.

These nightstand designs are made to use standard size wood. And all joints are easy to assemble with the Kreg Jig. This makes them great for anyone who can build them.
In construction, only plywood is used for drawers. This leaves you with sturdy furniture that will last forever.
You can also use hardwood for the drawer boxes if you prefer. I love building plywood drawers because I know I can easily cut straight boards on a table saw, giving me perfectly square drawers.
How To Build A Diy Nightstand With Floating Top
Oak has gotten a bad rap since the bad builders class of the 90s. But I really love the beauty of this cheaper wood! It all started with a wooden lamp I made last month.
So when white oak from my local lumberyard came up for sale, I knew I wanted to build with it. I’ve worked with softwoods before, but white oak was the most difficult thing I’ve ever done on a larger project.
That’s why these nightgowns are heavier than I thought. But I love that they don’t slide around on the hardwood floor next to the bed.

I also broke out two drill bits for making holes in hardwood. I found that I needed to speed up the drill before hitting the wood to get it to bite without breaking the bit.
To finish off just my nightstands, I decided to play with the grain of the white oak. The clear grain pattern I had was perfect for decorating with lime wax that I had been admiring on my friends kitchen table for some time.
White wax fills in the grain of the wood and makes it stand out. However, the oak is also a bit lighter and whiter. Then I finished it off with my new favorite top coat: Maker Brand Simple Finish.

What I love about any new build plan is trying something new. In addition to using new wood, I also made my first table saw!
The legs of this bedside table are tapered. This gives them an extra nice look. And even if it seems difficult, it is not so with a simple thread.
No math or knowledge of angles required to get perfect angles or cones. Instead, you attach the footer to the edge of the plywood so that the piece you want to cut hangs over the edge.

Here you can find all the details on how to make a simple DIY foot template. I like that you only have to set up the template once and then you can quickly cut the tapers for all the legs.
And it makes it easy to cut the corners of the 4 sides of the board to create the perfect tapered leg.

Hi Kathy! I want to build these bedside tables without drawers on the bottom. So only the top shelf open and the bottom drawer, but then it opens to the floor. Will it work? I am new to woodworking and wondering if they would be durable enough. Thanks in advance!

They would be very sturdy without the bottom drawer. Plant to stop the side tiger or take them to the end? If you stop them at the bottom of the top drawer, you may need to add a brace to the bottom to prevent the legs from bending. I am so excited about these nightstands! I love the clean, modern lines the black frame gives, I love that they have shelves and drawers AND I love that the shelves seem to float. It’s one of my favorite features of all-in-one furniture! They are so easy to set up and won’t break the bank either! Let’s start building!
Cut the shelf pieces to size. Measure and cut the side pieces to size and attach them to the sides of the shelf with 1-inch nails and wood glue. Measure and cut the front and back pieces and pin them the same way. Build 4 shelves.
Next, cut the side shelf pieces to size and drill 3/4-inch pocket holes on one side of each board. I used a Kreg Foreman for this project, but you can use a smaller Kreg Jig!

And attach them to the sides of the bottom shelf with 1/4″ pocket screws and wood glue. Do this for the two bottom shelves.
Measure and cut the back shelf piece, drill 3/4″ pocket holes on one edge and both ends of the board. Attach to the back of the bottom shelf with a 1 1/4″ pocket screw and wood glue between the side pieces.
Cut the side frame and top frame pieces to size. Drill 1 1/2-inch pocket holes at the top of each side frame section. Attach the frame side pieces to the top frame with 2 1/2″ pocket screws and wood glue.

Cut the under rails to size and drill 3/4 inch pocket holes at both ends. Center the rails inside the frame and secure with 1 1/4″ pocket screws and wood glue.
Attach the lower shelf to the frame with 1 1/2″ wood screws through the shelf and into the frame. The shelf should overlap
