How Can I Make My Nightstand Taller – What do you do when you buy a table, such as a nightstand, side table, or nightstand, and it feels like it’s too short?
I picked this up for cheap at a yard sale, though it was sturdy and had matching drawer joinery. I’m sure it was pretty low to the ground. Since he didn’t have a partner (or matching counterpart), I knew I wanted to do something special with him. It was meant to be a standalone piece. But to do this, it needs to be a little higher.

So I went to Lowe’s and bought these little leg extensions for a few dollars each. Next, I drilled holes in the bottom of each of the legs and screwed the leg extensions into place (the legs came with screws). It was a simple project that didn’t take much time or money, but paid off nicely in terms of the overall look.

I’ve been asked many times how I paint to achieve texture. I tried to explain, but I thought I’d take a few quick pics to show you!
I go in every direction to cover the piece in paint as quickly as possible. If I painted in one direction or even in sections, I’m sure it would take twice as long. I start in one place (usually in a corner) and move forward without paying attention to the brush strokes. I use the “swooping” technique when I get into small spaces or holes and dart in the wood and don’t bother trying to fix the brush marks caused by the pouncing.
I found that Annie Sloan Chalk Paint wanted to paint in all directions. It’s an artistic color! Therefore, he likes the texture created by this style of painting. I also love that on top of a table or dresser I can paint like that and then right before I wax it I usually lightly sand it just to smooth out any unevenness and reduce the texture a bit. It’s very smooth to the touch, but the wax, especially the darker wax, still brings out the delicate texture and makes it more interesting and unique than just the perfectly smooth finish you get with latex.

How did the roses replace the tree? 🙂 I took an equal number of photos with both, just to see which looked better, and the majority with the roses ended up being wrong in focus and lighting. Plus this pink one caught my eye more than the Union Jack! 🙂
It’s hard to tell in this photo, but I’m really done with both layers at the top of this photo. Rose, at Wood Icing, showed me how to apply and flow the wax and it seemed to add some sturdiness, especially on tables and chests, so I gave it a try! It has a matte finish all over, but the top is very shiny…which I really love!

If you’re a local, head to Wood Icing in Chesterfield Mall and you’ll see this amazing table there! I’ve had the same nightstand for nearly 50 years. It started as one of the white princess style bedside tables. It’s been through several paint jobs and it’s time for an upgrade.
I recently purchased a new bed and mattress and found that the old nightstand was too low for the new bed. I looked for ways to make it louder. I’m no woodworker, but I do have some small skills, mostly in thinking about how to do things!
I could have gone out and bought a new nightstand and looked, but a) didn’t find anything I liked, b) didn’t find anything with the right sizes and c) love doing things like that and thought I’d give it a shot. Worst case scenario, if I broke it, I’d consider buying a new one anyway!

The bedside table already has legs, so adding “buns” would look silly. I had to find another way to make it 7-8 inches longer. I took my measurements and went to HomeDepot for supplies.

E6000 glue for sealing the edges of contact paper. You won’t need it if you’re just drawing.
How Tall Should A Nightstand Be?
Most furniture has an edge finish. For this particular table, I knew I couldn’t replicate the directed end. The solution was to remove the top and reuse it on top of the new shelf.
I started by removing the drawers from the bedside table and turning it over. As you can see, there are only four simple screws that attach the top to the frame. I removed the screws and the top of it came off right away.
At this point I measured the top of the frame and cut a piece of plywood to the same dimensions. I don’t have the equipment to cut it myself, so I bought a piece of 1/2″ x 24″ x 24″ plywood and ripped it from Home Depot to the dimensions I needed – in my case 18″ x 13″.

Remember, the thickness of the plywood is 1/32 inch thinner than the thickness listed. It is about the drying process.
I had the nice folks at Home Depot cut two 13″ sections out of the 1″ x 8″ x 6ft board. I knew I was going to have to measure and cut the longer piece at home. Theoretically, the long piece should be 18 minus 2 inches minus 1/16 of an inch, but I thought it would be easier to measure once the other pieces were in place and I could use a hacksaw to cut the length I needed.
Stick the two shorter sections to the side piece of the shelf to make a “U” shape. Glue is used to make it easier to join parts together.

Once the U-shape is complete, measure the distance between the boards and cut a piece of wood to fit.
This next step is optional. I knew I wanted to use this new open shelf for my electronics – kindle, my tablet, etc. and I wanted a little hole in the back for the cables. I drilled some small holes in the back of the shelf and then used my Dremel with a cutting blade to make a small hole in the back of the cabinet.
Whether you decide to cover the new shelf with contact paper or prefer to paint it, you’ll need to design a side table to seal the new wood. The contact paper doesn’t stick to the wood, so you still need to hold the shelf.

I’ve always found that the edges of the contact paper lift up. I used my finger to apply E6000 glue along the edges of the contact paper to seal it to the cabinet.
Putting the lid back on was a challenge for me. I applied glue to the top of the box frame and then put the lid on and let it dry.
If you are good with a drill, you may be able to set the screws at an angle so that they hold the cap on both sides. I’m not that competent. I decided to just install the top right into the frame. Once I found I had the correct length of screws I put three screws along each side. This top was not going anywhere.

In my case, I didn’t want to re-use the old hardware, but my new hardware was a different length and had center holes spaced apart. I measured the distance between the centers of the handles and transferred the measurements to the front of the drawer.
I drilled new holes for the handles and then used wood putty to fill in the old holes. Then I improved and painted the staircase surface.
I hope you found this guide interesting, and even if you don’t need to raise your workbench height, it may inspire a solution to many problems you may encounter. The new bedside table in our bedroom was very long on my to-do list. With all the other projects, I kept putting them off. But not anymore…
