We recently built a new house and wanted to add a large dressing table. We decided to use large reclaimed wood for the fireplace and reclaimed wood for the entire table. This is one of the plans. This is an old Douglas fir that was removed from the storage room. The beam is 22 feet long; It is 6 inches thick and 11.75 inches wide. I want to preserve the wood and the rustic atmosphere.

I cut the wood into 6 x 6 pieces and cut the ladder. I used a circular saw to cut the wood lengthwise, turned it around and cut it again. This left a 1.5 inch section in the center that was cut with a saw (a large pipe chain commonly used for demolition). I have a lot of hand tools and I try to use them for most jobs, but sometimes I use power tools. The large jet cleans the cut edges well.
Some of the table tops and supports are 14 feet tall; 2 inches thick and 13 inches wide. I wanted the table to be 44 inches wide, but once I got the wood down I found it was too wide for comfort. The end table was 39 inches wide and it was perfect (I already had three 13 inch wide tables that worked fine).
In the middle of the project, I need to move all the stuff from other parts of the house to the garage to finish building the new house. Let’s just say things get a little confusing at this point. I parked in this place the other day. You can see some of my planes on the board. I have to say that I love using hand tools because they are so relaxing and fun to work with and I spend most of my evenings at my desk.

Here you can see the tenons cut at the end of the stretcher. I have a lot of rope to cut by hand. Once the screw is cut, the base is bolted down and put back in place, epoxyd. The tenons are very strong so no need for force (I don’t want a gap in the package).
Here I just matched the end of the bed to see how the joint was. I must say that working with old wood is very satisfying. The grain is large which makes the wood very hard, but it cuts very well, and the grinding of the grain is perfect (something that can be easily achieved with more hand tools). All the big boxes were cut there and each one took about 2 hours (half an evening).
You can place a chair next to the table and not worry about where the legs are. I think this is my favorite table style. The entire table is mine and based on the wood I work with.
How To Make A Round Concrete Table Top
Here I have assembled the three top boards with the edges and joints cleaned up. There is a one inch thick plank of baltic wood under the planks to keep the boards in place and make sure they don’t split. The plywood is drilled an inch deep so the bottom is all level. I used the CNC router above to cut about an inch of depth every 4 inches in the grid, and used a hand punch to punch out the blocks. Finally, plywood (epoxyd in place) after cleaning the main hole in the base with a large plane.
Just paint 2 part epoxy. I tried the roller and it filled the epoxy with lots of small bubbles and it was a failure. A quality brush seems to work best. Epoxy is recommended with a working time of 40 hours. I found that it softened even more when it was above zero Celsius (32 F) outside, and I had to use a propane heater in the garage to keep the epoxy warm enough. This epoxy requires at least 10 C for the chemical reaction to harden the epoxy. I’ve experimented with very light stains before, but found the color to be too dark. Epoxy is clear and seems to bring out the color of the wood very well with no staining at all.
Place a table in the house. The frame is 6 inches x 11.75 inches and 10 feet long (including tenons on the ends). It takes 2 people to move it.

The end of the ladder is two 6-inch x 5 3/8-inch pieces, cut from the top and bottom of the board. They are very heavy, but they all disassemble for easy movement. These joints are probably the best I’ve ever made without holes in them. The table frame is finished with 3 coats of satin polyurethane.
The solid floor is attached to the slats under the legs so that the wooden beams do not rise. The table is too heavy to move.
I ran with the rope at the end to check my height. The two brackets are cut in the center one inch longer than needed so there will be room to adjust the final length. I had to cut them to about an inch to get the right length (I’ve never done this correctly before). The two central uprights are sunk 3 inches deep into the pavement and are completely solid. The cross-sections of both the ends and the two center supports are 32 inches wide (the table top is 39 inches wide).

The buttons are placed. I wiped the table with the wood first so I didn’t touch it at the end. I can’t see the tree moving and I’m so happy that everything is fine…
All the tables are ready for Christmas dinner. It is 12 feet and one inch long (I thought I would cut it later if needed, but I didn’t need to). Its height is 30 inches and its width is 39 inches. The total weight is about 500 kilograms. 16 adults can sit at the table (18 seats). It suits the house very well. Once the epoxy hardens enough (about 3 weeks) there are a few small bubbles to deal with and you may just have to use a buffing wheel to get them out. I don’t think I’ll ever move that table (or build another one in my lifetime).
