) but another project for our family room. Aside from the fireplace renovation, this is the only room in the house with more structural/decorative changes. We wanted to fill the room with furniture and decor that we really liked, despite being on a tight budget. I shared the Ikea Hack/Pottery Barn Knock-Of Apothecary Cabinet in my last post here and today it follows the same theme- a taste of my pottery barn on a DIY budget!
How To Make A Coffee Table
This beautiful wood slab coffee table has metal legs. I wanted an industrial-meets-rustic style in our space to offset the femininity of the fireplace and tufted sliding chairs. I loved how the black legs played off the black hardware on the apothecary cabinet. I also loved that it could wipe the bottom! (This is a big deal because our golden retriever Lucy sheds a lot!) So what?

I know a lot of the price is due to the reclaimed pine slabs and metal legs. So, I started thinking about how we could achieve a minimalist look with humble materials. We recently built my mom’s farmhouse table with 2×8’s and had great success. I thought using a combination of 2x8s, 4x4s and 2x4s would achieve a similar result for this table. Here’s what we did!
We cut 2x8s at 48″ into 4 pieces. We glued and bolted them together before connecting the boards with two 2x4s cut at 32″. We’ve had issues in the past with the table blowing up like this (because there’s not much room for expansion and maintenance) – years. Although we have a table that is five years old, the short answer is that we have not experienced explosions. Made this way. Even if we do – we like rustic furniture. After that, Mack (my husband) had the great idea to wrap the table top in 2×4’s and add a thick false floor. This will give a similar look to the reclaimed wood board and will effectively hide where we added the legs! We set up the corners and run 2x4s with a table to give them a straight edge. Then we glue and nail the 2x4s to the top edge of the table, making sure they are smooth.
Rough Mango Wood Coffee Table
We decided to use 4x4s up to 17″ for the “faux metal” legs. We attached them to the top using a piece of plywood cut to 3.5 x 26″. Then we cut two 2x4s to 19″ and added 4.5″ to the bottom. We used long rustic black screws to attach it, then nailed it at an angle on one side to prevent rotation.
The wood is rough so I sanded all the pieces with 60 grit sandpaper. I went back with 120 to give a silky smooth finish. We stained two coats of Minwax Dark Walnut following the manufacturer’s instructions. After drying, we did two layers of polyurethane over the satin.
We used an all-in-one stain on the legs and a polish called Polisheds on the black. It has great coverage and it’s only two coats!

After the required drying time, Mac brought the table up and attached the legs to the table with wood screws. And then I had fun making it! It’s nice to have a coffee table, especially one that can withstand the wear and tear we get from our kids. Overall, this was an easy and quick project that went well with the style of the room. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that it’s only $50 either!

Industrial Coffee Table
If you are a beginner designer or want to improve the look of your living room without spending a lot of money, building a simple coffee table is a great project. To get a professional result, you must first build the frame and then install the table and the bottom floor.
First you need to build the sides of the coffee table. So, make the poles 2×4 wood and the apron 2×2 wood. To connect the parts together, you need to use a pocket hole system. Raise the stakes to get a professional result.
After that, you need to install the 2×4 wood apron and back. Install 2 1/2” screws through the pocket holes to attach the apron to the legs. Use a carving square to make sure the corners are right.

Also, compare aprons with standard sleeves. Also, for a professional result, level the sides of the table before installing the wood panels.
The next step in the project is to install the bottom layer of the coffee table. Cut 2×6 slats to size (make sure the slats are 5 1/4″ wide) and position them. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Apply wood glue to the edges. Before laying the planks.
Make sure the slate is perfectly round with a spirit level. Wipe off excess glue with a cloth before it dries.

Installing a desk is a simple process if you use proper planning and techniques. Attach the slats with 2 1/2” wood screws and add glue to strengthen the bond. After that, protect it with the legs between the upper table of the frame, using aprons.
If you don’t want to drill the top apron, you should drill pilot holes in the table top and insert 2 1/2” wood screws. Countersink the heads of the screws to get a good look.
Last but not least you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you should fill the holes with a good wood filler and let the mixture dry thoroughly for a few hours. Then, sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper and clean the dust with a dry cloth.
