How To Make An End Table – DIY Side Table with Shelf (Use Only 2x2s!) This simple side table or side table is a great weekend model that only requires a few basic tools! . Tools and Materials For this simple DIY end table you will need: (8) 2x2x8 (or use this tutorial to cut your own 2×2 from 2×4) Saw (you can use a jig, miter saw or large miter saw) Drill/screwdriver Wood glue clamps ( (preferably long poles or pipe clamps) The tables are made from glued together 2×2’s, you can use other sizes of lumber here if you want, but I just like the “butcher block” look of the 2×2’s. In this post you can learn how to make your own 2×2. However, if you don’t see a table, 2x2s straight from the store will work. First I cut the 6 2x2s in half, giving me 12 2x2s about 48 inches long. – Not sure. I’ll cut it later. .I cut them into two 6’s and attached the 6’s with wood glue and pipe clamps. This gave me two separate boards about 9 inches wide and 48 inches long. 6 After the glue is applied to each part of the dryer, I smooth the top. If you have a planer, you can plan each section, but if not, a belt sander or orbital sander will work just as well. So I glued the two panels together. This gave me a large board that was 18″ wide x 48″ long and consisted of twelve 2×2’s. Again, if you don’t want to use 2x2s here, just end up with 18″ wide, you can stick a different size here. Starting with a smooth edge from the beginning. Use a square to make sure you cut it at 90 degrees. I then measured from the smooth edge and cut two 21″ long pieces to make the top and bottom boards. Sand well to remove any tacky residue, then apply more stain/paint as needed. I colored this minwax province. Step 2: Assembling the Side Table Frame The frames are also made of 2x2s and they are drawn, I just glue them together and clamp them together. But with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, the top and bottom flats expand and contract and cause it to split.. So to prevent this, I drilled pilot holes in the side frame to give it some “sliding room” to move when needed to screw in.. Mine is this Locations are marked. A frame and a hole were drilled at each location using a small drill. Note: The bottom holes need to be at least 2 ¾” so they don’t hit the wood studs from step 2 and come out of those holes. Step 4: Assemble the end panel after paint and stain. Dry, I used 2 ⅞” black wood screws to attach the top and bottom shelves of the two side frames. Pre-drill holes for this. Important because the top and plate can be separated with these large screwdrivers.. It’s also important to put the pieces together. If you have some angle clamps or a speed gauge, clamp them as you install or check for correct angles after each screw. You don’t want to end up with an unbalanced or “leaning” side table.5 Step 5: Arrange the coffee table After putting the table together, I applied several coats of poly (using Minwax Polycrylic) to seal and protect.
