4. Take a 3 foot piece of rope and use washi tape/paint tape – place it under the dowel above and below the pieces of rope.
6. Tie a square knot with the first 4 ropes, leave the first rope untied and tie it into a half loop knot.
8. Tie another row of square buttons 4 inches or so from the top row, taking 2 buttons from the first two buttons above and starting two ropes.

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 until you have approximately 13 rows of square knots (or until desired length).
10. Tie another 3-foot rope over all the ropes in the last row of square knots, then tie another half knot in the rope.
11. Take the runner out from under, tie the first knots and cut the ends of the folded rope in half and pass the ropes at both ends.

Step Three: Pull the outer right rope in front (to the left) of the other ropes and wrap the end around the door hinge. This will be the base for the next row of so-called half hitches that will form a horizontal row. Use the second rope from the right to tie a knot in the rope that is wrapped about 6″ below the dowel.
Step Four: Use the same thread to tie a second knot on top of the main thread. This is called a half pit.

Step Six: Repeat the second, third and fourth ropes on the outside and tie another half knot to tighten and so on. You will start to see patterns. This is the horizontal half.

Step Seven: Continue tying consecutive ropes to a single knot. You don’t want it to be so dense that it spills over the edges.
Step Eight: Again starting from the right side, use the four outer loops and make a 1.5″ square button under the straight line of your buttons.

Skip the next four rows (five to eight) and tie another square knot using rows nine to 12.
Step Nine: Starting from the right again, use the remaining four rows (numbers five through eight) and tie a 3″ square knot under the dowel.
Step Eleven: Pull the two outer wires to the right. Then, using lines three through six, make 11 more square buttons below the vertical row in step seven. Then, using the next four rows, make another square button about 1.5 squares from the last square button.

Step Three: Starting again from the right side, repeat steps three through seven to make another horizontal knot.
Step Fourteen: Starting on the left side, use the same rope and make another horizontal knot about 2.5″ from the previous one. You will do this from left to right.
Step Fifteen: Starting from the left, make a row of square stitches without skipping stitches, resting 1″ below the vertical rows. The second row of buttons is a square. This is called an alternate square button. You don’t want too many. between these lines, so you can pull them close together. .

Step Sixteen: Continue until you have a total of 13 rows of square knots. This part is the center of your table runner, so everything from here will be the same as you did above.
Step Seventeen: Add another horizontal button starting from left and right.
Step Eighteen: Go down about 2.5 and make another straight row from right to left using the same main rope.

Step Eighteen: For this part, leave two strands of rope on the right side and tie a square knot using three to six stitches. Skip stitches 7-10 and use stitches 11-14 to tie another 14 button squares. Repeat to skip four stitches. You will have six paths left.
Skip two more rows to the left and knit three to six stitches into a square button 1.5″ from the last row of square stitches. Then skip the next four stitches and finish the pattern with a second row of square buttons, leaving you with six extra stitches on the right.
Step Twenty: Measure 11″ from the last row of horizontal knots and tie a square knot using the four outer stitches on the right side. Then tie the next four to a square knot 1.5″ above the last knot.

Step Twenty Two: Finally, tie horizontal knots 1.5″ apart in a row of square knots. Cut the planes as you like, paying attention to their length. Pick up a cotton swab from the floor and gently pull out the buttonholes. Then cut down the middle of the head knot of the shell and cut off the ends.
