How To Build Crafting Table – Done!! Finally ready! My new DIY craft room and sewing table. We built it ourselves! A breakthrough for this non-carpenter couple. I am very pleased with the results!!

I wanted a table that was counter height…so I had the option of standing or sitting to work…no more hunching over the kitchen counter. The surface needs to be large enough to accommodate the width of the fabric for my sewing and knitting projects, at least 45″. I need a rack wide enough to fit my Cricut machine with easy access to it. And I need storage space.

In the end, I decided to use Ana White’s Modern craft desk plan… and modified it to suit my space and needs.

I downloaded the free plan from the website and studied it carefully for a few weeks. I realized that my carpentry knowledge was very limited. And the necessary tools. But my husband and I finally figured out how to make a DIY craft table with very basic tools.

The original plan called for two levels of shelving. I made the longer shelf on a table 48″ wide. Since the plywood is 4ft x 8ft, all I had to do was cut the length. My shelf is about 44″ wide, 34″ high and 11 1/2″ deep. We used pine planks to make the base of the shelves.

This rack is where I keep my Cricut machine and the necessary wires and cables. This is one of my main considerations when determining rack length… it needs to fit my Cricut machine for easy access.

This is also where I keep my laminator and laminating sheets. I store mine in a ceramic planter with adhesive. Opposite the shelves is an exit, which is close and quite convenient.

On the second long shelf level, I keep my sewing kit, sticker machine, and tools for my embroidery machine. I also have several desk holders for pens, scissors to cut paper, notes and other items.

I love the new sharp pencils!! (probably the result of 31 years of teaching). I keep it in a cute glass jar I got at a thrift store for 49 cents. They sit atop my sketchbook, which I use to design all kinds of projects.

Like the original Modern Crafts Desk plan, I have 3 small storage drawers at the end of my shelving unit. This is where I keep some of my art supplies for the grandkids.

Across the rack, I have a longer quilting ruler and a smaller mat.

As you can see, I have plenty of space to store things I use frequently. And I like that I have the flexibility to easily change things as I want.

My DIY craft table is 48″ x 66″. We chose birch plywood because it has a smoother surface…necessary if I’m going to cover it with cloth. Lowe cut the boards for us…only one piece needed. (The remaining piece will one day become a table for my new embroidery machine!)

Birch plywood is very heavy. Due to its size, getting it home was a bit of a challenge. Something you need to consider if you are working on a similar project. And trying to climb the stairs is pretty funny. In retrospect. But not at that time! We did but!!

Since this table top is very heavy, we simply placed it on two baseboards. We didn’t use the floating top as originally planned. And we didn’t fix it either. So far it hasn’t moved!

Rough birch plywood edges. Because I often bend up and across the table for my sewing and knitting projects, rough edges pose a problem. I don’t want to catch my clothes all the time. So I looked around the aisles of Lowe’s and found a great practical solution to this problem.

This birch tape is very easy to apply. Just use the iron and iron from the side. Very simple! However, it takes two people to register. Let it cool, sand the edges and paint gently. Paint sticks easily. Now my edges have a nice finished look and I can lean against them without hanging off!

Then I painted the top with white paint to keep everything nice and bright in the room. It’s the perfect size to fit my large cutting mat too.

For seating, I chose a white metal counter-height bench. I like that I can put it under the table when not in use.

I bought three sit downs and are making one for each of the grandkids when they arrive. They love working on projects at the desk. It’s amazing how a little glue and scraps of paper, sequins, and foam shapes can keep them busy for a while. I have vinyl tablecloths to cover the table so I don’t have to worry about paint, glue or marker while making them.

Sharing my love of all things DIY with my grandchildren means a lot to me. And now we have an amazing place to create together!
