How To Make A Featherboard – I can’t remember where I found this feather board but it’s on my to-do list. The concept is simple: It is mounted on the outer edge of the top of the bench saw, and a lever with a spring-loaded pad extends to hold the stock against the fence. The advantage of jig clamping is more reach – it works with wider stock. It’s also a good choice for a table saw with a top that doesn’t have a magnet to stick to, like my plastic top or cheap aluminum saw top.

I used a piece of the same plastic as the spring I used on the table saw and cut it about 3/16″ thick. Another option is thin plywood or another type of plastic – plain PVC pipe is will be fine
1-1/2″ thick solid maple is used for the clamping blocks mounted on the saw edge. It has a 3/8″ bolt and a handle on the end to hold it in place and a slot for some front and rear adjustments:
The bottom of the clamp bar has self-adhesive sandpaper to improve grip on the handle.

They are commonly used in applications on milling machines and table saws, often holding smaller workpieces securely in place as they are fed through the blade.
I needed to route the edges of some 1/4″ gray strips, so I just made two pairs of feather boards for my router bench.

Feather boards can be made in various sizes, but these seem to best suit my needs.
Router Table Feather Boards
Solid wood works too; once you have everything in place, make sure the root is oriented along the length of the board (the roots need to line up with the fingers for strength).
Frame squares are used to mark the 30-degree angle of the ends and mark the fingers 5mm apart. (It is now easier to point fingers when the ends of the board are square after cutting at 30 degrees.)
I used a table saw, drill press, jigsaw and band saw to make these feather boards. The same result can be achieved with different tools – that’s exactly what I use.
How To Use A Featherboard With Woodworking Tools
Use a drill press and a 5/16″ drill bit to mark them and drill the bit holes. Use a scroll saw to cut the material between the holes.
I used a 2″ long, 1/4″ carriage bolt and a 1/4″ threaded T-nut for each knob adjustment.
I used the multi-step process outlined below to align the holes and clean the disc (without bangs).

I wanted the T-nuts to be slightly below the surface, so I made a countersunk for them as well. This is my job:
*I find that if I drill a full 1/4″ hole first, I reduce the wobble of the hole saw. This allows the hole saw to align from top to bottom, creating of a perfect (like) disc. The first 1 The /16″ pilot hole gave me a 1/4″ bit for the top and bottom. This gave lower starting points so the bottom end wouldn’t blow.
After cutting the button, I drilled a 5/16″ center hole to install the T-nut.
Tips For Mastering Featherboards
The heads of the carriage bolts had to be flat on both sides so they would fit on the T-rail of my milling machine table.
This is done with a hard disk sander, but if you hold the bolt firmly in a vise, you can use a grinder or even a hand-held rotary tool.
I painted the knobs and lightly sanded the boards to remove any sharp edges.

The feather board I made in this post is a little different. It doesn’t have “feathers” or “fingers,” but it is a wooden feather that serves the same purpose. Instead of using fingers, I use a wheel (bearing) to guide the workpiece and hold it firmly against the fence of the table saw.
Feather boards are designed for mini table saws (Proxxon table saws). Runners are designed in proportion to the size of the table space and other parts to the size of the table saw. However, the construction process is the same as for a regular saw.
I made feather boards over the weekend. The only material you need is plywood, which is easily available in stores. Choose birch plywood if possible. Birch plywood is durable and has a nice texture.

If you are a woodworking beginner with no experience with featherboards (fingerboards), I recommend getting some of the first featherboards for your workshop. Once you get used to them and understand how they work, how to set them up and use them, you may want to consider making them yourself.
How To Make Your Own Featherboards
The down boards I made in this article are not standard down boards and have some differences from store bought down boards. For example, instead of a feather, it has a wheel pressed into the workpiece. Feather wood is not difficult to make, and anyone with woodworking experience can do it, but it is important to know how to install and use it.
Feather boards are made of two parts – an adjustable stem and a slide rail that fits into the T-rail of the table saw.
The overall size of the feather board is 10cm x 12cm, 5cm and can be adjusted up to 7cm towards the workpiece.
Cutting Dadoes On A Table Saw
NOTE: The feather boards I made in this tutorial are primarily designed to attach to desktops. However, since the trunk and T-track guides can be separated, the feather guard can also be fixed to the fence.
I use a circular saw track. Of course, you can use a table saw for the cuts, but make sure you have the right equipment as you work with small pieces of wood. (cross cut slide, miter gauge or push rod).
Mark the slots on the base plate and cut out using the milling templates. The slots are 8mm wide and allow easy insertion of M6 bolts.

Tip: Use double-sided tape to fix the bottom plate to the table top. So the slot won’t move while it’s wired. You can also use a jigsaw to cut and sand the edges.
