We were disappointed when Toliy had to go back to college in the fall and didn’t have enough time to prepare a bar stool.

So when Toliy texted this Christmas break and said she was coming home for a few days and wanted to do some banking, I said:

We used scrap wood (including 3/4″ grade plywood) and 2x2s ripped from 2×4 pieces (you can use 2×2 shelves) to build this deck.

One thing that made this building strong is that we knew that this seat would be used for many purposes, since it is longer than the original seat, we didn’t want to use only the bottom flange. So we welded the 3/4″ thickness of the steel sheet to the 1/8″. If you don’t have a welder, call your local welding shop and have them weld some scrap metal – it will be cheaper than buying a flange (it can be expensive).

We love this chair and how it turned out, but it’s not a beginner’s work. Please do not try as a first job.

Set the circular saw blade to 3/4″ deep and place the 2×2 brace on top as shown above, cutting the long edge on one side and the short edge on the other. Glue (do not twist or nail) the two parts together.

How To Make Bar Stools

Use 1-1/2″ socket head screws and 2-1/2″ socket head screws or flat wood screws (2-1/2″ long will work).

Connect the outer supports with countersunk screws 2-1/2″ from the outside. Only one screw for each joint you need.

Fill all holes with wood sealant and allow to dry. Add more wood shavings as needed. When the wood mask is completely warm, sand the work in the direction of the wood grain with a 120-grit sandpaper. A scraping operation to remove sand residue. Also remove any remaining sanding material from the work surface. Clean the work with water.

With all the tight measurements still attached to the string, I was able to cut them down. I have an older version of the Cobalt Rewards and I can see why they don’t sell this anymore. There are too many changes in the slide system and it doesn’t hold the part. That’s why I only use this saw for power cuts.

Tight spaces can be cut to width. The first quarter inch is cut wide to remove the rounded edges.

Then about a million pages will be torn for empty seats. They are 1″ wide and 1-1/2″ long. I cut it so that the grain extends horizontally along the 1-1/2 inch sides.

Once everything is turned in the correct configuration, and the surface is a good part, they can be connected together. I use some pieces of paper as the ones that move the edges so that the pressure of the casting does not damage the glued parts.

Whenever possible, I do my last long cut on a table saw and cross sled. It’s more true than I’ve ever seen.

All center pieces require a half turn at the end. Only the leg needs it on one side, but the other will cut it on both sides. This is easy to do once the dado pack is installed and raised to half the thickness of the material.

The leg piece gets two half turns on the side in the middle of the bed. To get the proper spacing for the dado stacks I used, I made what I call a notch maker style stop. This is explained in detail in the video I found in the articles in this article.

Ways To Make A Chair

In the half turn two long rails can be glued to the two legs to form a leg assembly. To make sure that the seat has a nice smooth glue surface, I cut the top of my leg assembly and to do this, I joined the two together and then lowered my four legs. This provides a nice flat surface for reference on the fence.

At the top of the leg assembly ready for the mountain I can continue with the gluing starting with a small rail.

Followed by a chair. I’m sure I’ll have to use some scrap wood again so it doesn’t damage the top of the seat and the headstock.

Once the glue was dry, I used a cutting sledge to cut the top to its final length. I also used a wall to tear the top down to its final width.

Most of the joints are flat and cheap grade banks. This makes sanding more time consuming.

I use a small chamfer on my trim router to smooth out the rough edges. I also made the mistake of cutting on the normal road for almost the first bar stool which resulted in a few broken pieces. Stopping the leg and cutting others has solved the problem. Therefore, it is only one complete bank on the leading edge.

Stools Dimensions & Drawings

I usually use America’s First Minwax Stain with great results. I decided to play it up a bit and used Carrington by Rustoleum stain which was a dark shade I like. I finished it off with a few coats of water based Target coater EM6000 satin varnish sprayed on. It’s a bit pricey, but I really like the results I got.

In the end I wasn’t 100% happy with the color of the spots but that’s no one’s fault but mine. I will go to the dirt
