How To Make A Dining Table Smaller – Earlier this year when I was working on MOTO (Makeover Takeover) there was one area where I felt like I was a bit blind. I really understood how I wanted to achieve it, the blue velvet sofa was glued on, but when it came time to decide what to do with the dining table top, I couldn’t. In the grand scheme of the design, it felt like an afterthought… It often happens every day here that documents are useless (until they get bigger and I don’t have to deal with it) and the Amazon drop-off point is the box, better, the smaller ones. It’s a bit of a waste of “life”, so I don’t want to mess around too much with something that doesn’t make much sense. I wanted to do something after filming that could still work in our lifestyle. So I searched our archives for inspiration and it really helped. Very helpful, as now, several months later, I think it’s time to share with you if you are facing the same challenge as me.
Continue with the six “everyday” dining table methods, although leaving it plain is also a viable option…so let’s call it method #1. Now for method #2:
How To Make A Dining Table Smaller
I thought, let’s start with what I ended up with at the dining room table: the “bass central” design. Yes, I also have some candles and plates, but those are more useful for framing shots. In real life, you’ll only see one thing sitting in the middle of my desk (NOT surrounded by other clutter like my husband’s headphones or a random sweater and clutch I threw on there one night when I was leaving.)…

I got tall (vase in hand from Target years ago) but you can go shorter like Sara did here in her old house. You can go the route of fresh flowers, or choose potted plants for lower maintenance (provided your room gets enough light to support the thing).
This is probably my favorite restaurant in our archives because BOY ARE WINDOWS GOOD. But beyond that, a single centerpiece vase of organic, asymmetrical herbs feels lively and soothing, and isn’t that exactly what you want in a breakfast like this?

For a larger table, I’m ALL about “stacking” like Emily did in her dining room in Portland. It’s an 8-seater so there’s plenty of table space to cover and empty, it can feel empty and unfinished.
When “collecting” things, note how they look from all angles. You want to make sure you’re separating things so that whether you’re looking straight on or from the side, they don’t look like a price board at your local store.
In Portland, they went with monochromatic sculptures, but in this “bio modern” dining room, it’s a mix of vases and vases. Notice the strict color palette and variety of shapes and sizes to keep things interesting. Always remember that just because you have 10 items in your “collection” doesn’t mean they all have to be displayed. If it works, great! But you can always share things if you’re looking for something more organized and customizable.

“Group 3” is the cousin of the collection and the central vase. As easily as the center of a vase, the collection is more visible (without having to think too long and hard about the installation). Three stands of different heights are a good choice (and sold in such sets).
If you don’t want to go the candlestick route, there’s always the three ship route, like they did in Sylvia’s dining room for that surprise announcement. I think the key is the different levels as I mentioned. This way you can more easily group things in the middle of the table, but if you have three things of the same size, I would go for something smaller than placing things on the long path of the table. .
This is another option I really like (I like something more asymmetrical because it gives the eye a lot to play with). That’s what I call “tall/low” because, well, there’s one thing that’s tall or tall (preferably with some greenery to add height), and one thing that’s short and wide (in this case foot plate. result… I think).

You can go the route of placing the top/bottom items in the middle of the table or cancel them to one side and place other items on the table if that’s how you’re having fun.

In Emily’s old house in Glendale, she also went with a plate + collection, but in this case it was like a speaker/snack plate with a drink glass, glassware, and again, a bowl of peanuts (never underestimate the power). peanut tray for styling, ha).

And finally, our last category here…the “frequently set” table. I think this is less for everyday and more for “shop is coming up and I’ll have a snack instead of dinner.” You can use all the same ideas for the main anchor pieces, but move them a bit to make room for plates, napkins, mirrors and anything else you want to place.
