It was in my living room until a recent remodel when I moved it into the kitchen/dining area. Although it is a little small, it was perfect for my small family (single mom with two small children). And its smaller size makes my kitchen space feel much bigger. The only problem was that it was too short/low for my seats.

Most tables are about 30′ long, mine was 28′ long. I couldn’t sit comfortably in my dining room chairs and tall guests passed out. So I decided to make it higher. It only took about 10 minutes to install, including painting and drying. With coating and drying time, it took about 45 minutes to get this table on top…

And I bought 5/16″ x -18″ x 3/8″ thick stud nuts (found here) that the collar legs attach to (see photo below).

Then the table was turned upside down. Fortunately, the center of my table legs is already marked. If you don’t have one, be sure to mark the center by measuring the diameter of the leg and marking the center. Do this two or three times back to back to find the center.

I then used a 5/16″ drill bit to drill a hole 1/3 of the way down. Note – if you don’t have a 5/16″ drill bit, I recommend just buying one (like this one). It was only a few dollars more than buying one piece. Now I have over 10 more bits for future projects – awesome.

If you see holes on the side of this leg (photo below), please note that I did not drill them. They’ve been there before – who knows. I don’t mind, the table still works perfectly and they didn’t mess around with this project.

Before painting I flipped the table over to make sure it wouldn’t wobble – it didn’t. It was very strong and still is (I’m writing this 3 weeks after the project was completed).

Then I painted all the legs and put a few coats of paint on each one. To match the color, I took one of the existing legs to Sherwin-Williams and matched it. I only bought a small amount (sample size) for a few dollars.

Tip – I’ve found it helpful to use masking tape, cups, etc. to dry your feet.

Should Nightstands Be Taller Than The Bed?

My small table is over 30 inches long and matches my dining room chairs perfectly. I had a guest who sits 6’3 comfortably at the table. It was very practical, cheap, easy and fast. Hope this helps if you need to make the table taller!
