How To Make A Mosaic Table Top – Many people ask us how to make a mosaic on the table. Especially how to create a mosaic on a table top. This is one of our favorite mosaic projects and we share lots of tips and tricks.
In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll show you how to transfer your design to a board using a grid. We’ll show you how to cut tiles to fit your design. Next, we will explain how to mix the grout and apply it to the mosaic. This is a really fun project, and when you’re done, you’ll have your very own DIY mosaic table! 2. Draw your design on the table with chalk. To do this, print your drawing. Here is our design if you want to use it. (Right click to download.)
Using a ruler and pencil, draw a grid of 16 squares (3 horizontal lines and 3 vertical lines) on the model. Start by drawing a line horizontally and then vertically through the center. Draw a line between the horizontal center line and the top edge. And the lower end. Then draw a line between the vertical center line and the left edge. And the right end.
Draw a grid of 16 squares with chalk on a round wooden table. The grid on the board will be larger but have 3 horizontal lines and 3 vertical lines like the template.

3. Break the tiles into small pieces. To do this, start by wearing safety glasses and protective gloves.
Hold the edge of the tile with pliers blades or a box cutter. Hold the blades in the direction you want to cut. Gently squeeze the pliers or blades to break the tile. Repeat to create several small pieces of all tile colors, but do not cut all the tiles. Leave something whole.
Glue each piece as you go, applying a small amount of glue to the rough side of each tile. If you cannot find a tile that matches your design, repeat the tile cutting process from step 3 to cut a piece to the correct size and shape. This is the fun part. Like doing a puzzle! Continue gluing the tiles until the table surface is completely covered. Let the glue dry completely.

5. Mix the grout. Remove the cloth. Seal the edges of the table tops with masking tape. Wear a dust mask and latex gloves if necessary. Mix the grout according to package directions. (Our coolies are called one part water and seven parts coolies.) Use a whisk to mix the coolies and water in the bowl of oatmeal until it’s the consistency of natural peanut butter. The grout will work for about 15 minutes, so get ready to grout the mosaic!
6. Grout the mosaic. Spread the grout on the mosaic surface directly on the tiles. It looks like you’re tearing apart a mosaic, but you’re not!
Use a sponge or putty knife to spread the grout around all the tiles. Be sure to apply grout to the outside edges of the countertop tiles and between each tile. Remove excess grout from the tile surface with a sponge without digging the grout between the tiles. Allow the grout to dry for 30 minutes. Check the grout as it dries and cover it with water if some areas seem to be drying faster than others. This will prevent cracks from forming.

7. Polish the mosaic. After 30 minutes, wipe the grout off the mosaic tiles with a damp paper towel or sponge.
8. Sand the tiles again with a damp paper towel or sponge. Repeat the drying and polishing process if necessary. What happens when you are very skilled and face a solid blank table? Oh, easy. Switch to DIY mosaic table mode! It happened to me. While shopping, I walked past a casual bistro table and she looked at me with sad big eyes and said – “Bring out my inner beauty, crafty chica!”
The next thing? The store clerk puts this baby in the back of my SUV. But really, you can use any sturdy table, you just want it to be sturdy so it can handle moisture from the glue and grout. Do not use anything that can deform.

The size of your table will determine how many supplies you need. Made a bunch of clay pieces and I thought that was a lot, but since the mosaics had to be glued together, I quickly ran out. Be sure to buy extras!
If you don’t have access to making your own baked clay pieces, you can find some at a craft store or here.
Gather all your large and small parts and draw your design. The way to “cheat” is to use large tiles that take up space! That’s what I ended up doing! Once you know what you want to do, start sticking!

Keep going! Add your favorite playlist or audiobook and enjoy the process. It’s very peaceful, a little long, but cool!
Stuff the pieces tightly. Grout can really make everything look distant, so glue these pieces together for maximum attention!
Once all of your pieces are attached, let everything dry overnight. Then mix the grout. I mixed mine to a creamy peanut butter consistency. Wear plastic gloves and put them on. Get into all the little holes as much as you can!

Once everything is covered, take a damp sponge or towel and wipe the excess grout off the table top. Clean the sponge/towel in the bowl of water, squeeze out the excess water and clean the table again.
Wait a few minutes to see the fog on the top of the table. Use a dry cloth to wipe everything off.
I did all of the above and still have some extra grout. no problem. Just wipe with this cloth.

Rewind a few months – Blue Hairs have been discussing this project for quite some time. Within a few months, each woman compiled a list of “projects.” One was salvaged from a garage sale, another was salvaged from an antique store, a third was salvaged from a donation pile, and one was a family heirloom. The choice of table is important, you want a glass or wooden top, preferably with a slightly raised edge.
The tables were cleaned and two needed a bit of prep: a new MDF and some spray paint.
Before the project, the Blue Hairs bought their supplies: glass gems, sea glass, shells, marbles, etc. (You can use any decorative material above), plastic containers, sponges, grout, rubber gloves, and mosaic tile glue. They needed a water source and trowels.
