End miter (angle A) is the same for short and long pieces. The two smaller parts are the same, one is rotated 180 degrees. Angles A or B can be greater than 45 degrees depending on the desired height and width. At this point, subtract from 90 to get the miter angle needed to set up the saw. One of these T-Bevels can be useful for checking angles and cuts or more advanced types of bevels.

Tables are simple. A lot of 2×6’s and 2×8’s cut 6′ and pocket holes together. Although it is difficult! I had to slide the legs separately from the top, otherwise they would be too heavy.
X Type Metal Table Legs 16&28 Inches
In the end, I followed Rogue Engineer’s plan for X-Legs. This table was designed by my friend Ashley from Cherished Bliss. So I followed the correct plan to build the bridge.
Using two 4×4 joists I had to mark the exact spot to make a step at each joint. Rogue Engineer’s plan is very clear and well marked, so all you have to do is follow it here.
When making knots, you must cut each other. You can use a circular saw, but I prefer my trusty one. Then use a chisel and/or dremel/sawsaw to remove all the wood.
X Leg Coffee Table
I finished the 2×4 with the ends cut at an angle so it’s not too boxy, but you can skip this step entirely. I attached it with 3 2 1/2″ wood screws.
At first, the bridge was supported by trestles made of pipes. The pipe was an odd width and I used a 1 inch spade bit to drill a hole under the foot. This tube was too big to fit properly and basically couldn’t be used as a runner. The table shakes violently. Anyway, it looked a little flimsy next to the 4×4 legs. I changed my plans.
I built this frame using the tubular 2×4’s I had. I drilled a hole in the 2×4 with a 15/16 spade bit. I used gorilla super glue and stuck the tube in the hole. I then proceeded to clamp the clamp in place by hammering it into place. I used 2 1/2 inch outside screws to attach the 2×4 to the table top.

This adds a lot of stability to the table, but you can easily build this frame with 2x4s and pocket holes instead of pipes. I bought it and didn’t have a spare 2×4 so I wanted to use a tube. (One of the pipes is black because it was originally sprayed for Buck.)
The last step was to build the money. I made it with a 2×4 and a pocket hole. It was well fitted and once in place it was a nice and sturdy table. No shaking!
This laborious outdoor table project shows that even an experienced builder (actually I’m not comfortable calling myself experienced but I don’t consider myself a beginner) can make mistakes. The key is not to settle for mediocrity and learn to use creativity to solve problems. Although this project turned out to be more painful than I would have liked, I am happy to have fixed the wobbly issue.

I finished the table by painting the legs Rustoleum Carbon Gray to match the outdoor sofa I built. I wanted something lighter for the top so I used a weathered wood method, but instead of minwax as usual I used a dark walnut. The very gray weather that I didn’t like produced a wooden effect. I added another layer of lime wash on top and left it there. I then finished the entire table with a Thompson outdoor printer. When winter comes I plan to put a tarp on my dining room table to last as long as possible. The elements we live in are cruel!
I love the X-Leg outdoor tables. It is very pleasant to sit, eat, enjoy the evening together, enjoy the view and feel the breeze. A citronella candle is all you need to repel mosquitoes. My husband bought a Traeger this year and we love cooking and entertaining with it. So there was an added incentive to finish the table and turn the entire floor into a beautiful and cozy social space. We have used it several times and will use it more often when the weather gets a little cooler.
We plan to replace the railings with black metal, install stairs to the backyard and finally a beautiful pergola for shade. Of course, all money is money, so that won’t happen for a while. The weather is so chilly and I can’t wait for the sun to set a little earlier. Because you can have a great dinner out there. And after dinner we can sit on the sofas around the fire pit and chat and toast s’mores.
