3. Drill the legs to the board. If you want, you can oil the table top to treat the wood and make the table easier to clean. Apply a small amount of oil to an old lint-free cloth and massage into the wood.

I’ve been eyeing the live edge wood table look for a while trying to pick one that would work well in our home. Our style is more seaside than rustic, but I really think that a beautiful piece of wood works for any style of home.
The biggest problem when building a table out of wood planks is getting the planks. I encourage you to check your local Craigslist, but failing that, pay me, Amazon Prime. Everything that went into this coffee table was purchased on Amazon and I’m linking it all in the tutorial below.
Live Edge Wood Slab Table
We ordered our live edge wood planks from Lumber Shack through Amazon. They have a wide range of wood including logs and stumps. The item arrived very quickly and was packed in several layers of protective packaging. We were very surprised at the price of our board (under $100) compared to local wood shops that wanted over $250 for a similar piece.
I narrowed it down to a few options based on the length and width we wanted for our space and then chose a piece based on the grain we liked. We ended up with a piece of maple with live edge bark and I’m all over it.
The second thing you will need to order are the table legs. It can go many ways, but I wanted hairy legs. There are a lot of options on Amazon and they start around $50 for 4. The easiest way to determine the height is to find a coffee table or side table you already own and measure it.

Remember to subtract the thickness of the board as this will be included in your final height. We ended up with 20 inch legs for a slightly taller table because we want to use it for occasional small board games.
The last materials needed are sandpaper and sanding block or electric sander, drill or screwdriver, brush and polyurethane. For this project, I prefer a matte polymer finish because I wanted it to look as natural to the wood as possible (but still have the protection of the polymer).
At first we thought we could stain the wood. We tried 4 stain and finish samples on the side we specified under the table (we like the grain on the other side better). After we let them dry, we loved how the polymer allowed the wood details to shine through and make the rest too dark.

So the first real step was sanding both sides of the wood board. Sean used his powerful sander and made every surface smooth as butter.
Then I actually cleaned the board and applied the poly. It had 2 thin layers on the bottom and 4 layers on top. 4 coats were also applied to the edges of the bark.
Be sure to place it on top of the plastic (we mounted it on some scrap boards on top of the plastic) as it will stick to the newspaper and dry. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours. Better to make sure it’s really dry.

What Can You Make With Live Edge Slabs? 12 Project Ideas
What a beautiful table. I didn’t know Amazon was in the live edge lumber business? (Do I even have to wonder… right?) I will look into this in the future. Have you ever worked with resin in your wood projects?

It can be used as a living space (studio for living, luckily)! So after getting a very modern board from a local lumber dealer, I knew I had to turn it into a coffee table ASAP. If you’ve been around for a while, you already know how crazy I am about living side projects, especially when they involve character. This was a project that took me several weeks, but all the TLC was worth it! Even cooler, it will probably last us a lifetime and thanks to my friends at Rust-Oleum!
I have both good and bad news about this project. The good news is that the table turned out AH-more or less. The bad news is that even though I made it for the new apartment, my mom loved it so much she stole it.
Live Edge Slabs
I absolutely love funky live edge wood planks…and I totally scored when I came across a local wood dealer (one type of live edge planks) and his collection of wooden scones. I’ve been wanting to make my own version of a whimsical round table for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity to do it. Here’s how I did it!
1. The first thing I had to do was level the plate. There are many ways to do this, but for this particular board I used a combination sander and router with a sled (I used my friend Brandon’s tutorial to make my sled)!
2. I had a lot of gaps and holes going all over my board that I wanted to keep. To do this, I glued the underside of the board (to prevent the epoxy from leaking) and then mixed a small amount of Varthane Super Glaze with Age Brown.

This thing moves! The pigment is already pre-mixed into the resin so you get a consistent color every time! It’s also a 1:1 ratio, which means I had to mix equal parts resin and accelerator and mix it together by hand!
3. After the epoxy cured, I did another round of smoothing and sanding and spent some time cleaning up the live edges.
4. My board had a pretty impressive crack, so I decided to add some decorative wooden arches to keep the crack from spreading. I used a router and a bow tie template for this and it made a huge difference (you can see it in action in the YouTube video)!
