I’ve been wanting to plant a chair for several years. I searched magazines and websites with beautiful plants for decks, patios and porches. I was originally going to buy one, but the price was a bit steep. I finally decided to make one below.

I bought this chair about 10 years ago with the intention of starting a new hobby. The back of the cane chair was ripped and I tried to re-sit the chair. I even bought a set online. It comes with instructions and all materials to complete a single chair. I never got around to doing this and eventually lost interest in this new skill.

After I decided to make my own chair maker, I remember sitting in my garage looking at chairs at my local thrift store!

I prepared the chair by dusting it and wiping it down with a mixture of water and a mild detergent.

As you can see from the pictures below, the back of the chair is already torn. With that as a starting point, I cut the seat with a pair of sturdy scissors, staying close to the edge of the seat.

As you can see below, the center part of the seat is easily removed. I’ve saved the space for future projects.

After removing the center part of the seat, I need to remove the hose that is sewn to the edge. As you can see in the picture below, the cane is woven from top to bottom through holes in the wood.

So I took wire cutters and cut the bottom, then used a pry bar to remove the stitching on the top of the chair. A little pull. Slow because the rod is old and keeps cracking. It was also quite thick and difficult to cut. The pieces were jammed into the hole and had to be pulled out with a screwdriver.

I removed all the sticks and started decorating the chair.

I didn’t want to crack, so I used leftover chalk paint: Wavy Inspiration Acrylic Chalk Paint. The price is quite reasonable and I love the colors it comes in.

I like to finish the wood with chalk paint. Although the wood has a glossy finish, the chalk paint glides on smoothly and adheres to the high gloss finish. When using chalk paint, it is best to use a natural brush. It finishes smoothly. If you use a synthetic brush, it will leave a lot of bristles showing the original tip.

I also used folk art and American acrylic paints for colors not available in chalk. Another reason I love chalk paint is its versatility. I can easily use fabric or gloss acrylic paint over chalk paint and the coverage is great.

I use both a gloss and a matte finish because my goal is to cover the finished chair with a strong protector like Folk Art Field Satin, which gives a nice satin finish with a nice balance between gloss and matte.

Note: The vitamin bottle pictured below is one of many things I use to mix the paint to the color I want.

As shown in the picture below, I started with pink chalk paint. I was hoping to use pink flowers. But the pink doesn’t come out. So I went with bright orange. I also decided that lime leaves were boring. So I went with some original chalk green mixed with acrylic metallic green paint.

My plan was to go through the hole, insert a large round plastic container, and enlarge the opening with a screwdriver. But there was a basket of baskets suitable for me to open. I put the basket in and then put a pot with some plants in the square basket. It fits perfectly.

But now I have a problem with my pores. I thought about running natural looking wires through the hole, but ended up buying moss from Dollar Tree and hot-gluing it around the seat to cover the holes.

I added some fake flowers to fill the job until the plants were big enough to fill the seat with water. I love the finished product! I have an old stone chair. I can make another chair stitcher!
