Take a 94 inch 2×4 and drill two pocket holes in one end of the wide side. Make sure both holes are on the same side of the board.

Mark 31 inches from each end of the upper stretcher/spreader and 12 inches from each end of the lower stretcher/spreader. These lines show where the outside of the supports line up.

Install the stretcher/spreader between the pieces with two 1 inch spacers, making sure the stretcher/spreader stays centered. Attach the supports to the stretcher/spreader using wood glue and pocket hole screws.

Take six 47 ½ inch 12 pieces, two each. Punch a pocket hole in each end of each piece on the wide, flat side.

Place the 6 pieces side by side with a 1/4 inch gap between the boards and measure the width from edge to edge. It should be approximately 34 ½ inches, but the exact size may vary depending on the actual width of your 2×6 board.

Then take a 34 ½ inch 2 x 6. This will be the center board that will make up the rest of the table. When lining up the boards, this middle board needed to be slightly wider than the others, so I trimmed it to the width of the other boards.

Attach the 12 2 x 6 to the center board using wood glue and pocket hole screws. Start on one side of the center board, leaving a 1/4″ gap between each board (you can use a 1/4″ lathe or carpenter’s pencil to make the gap). In the end you will need 6 planks on one side of the middle plate and 6 on the other.

Start with the short side. Take two 45 ¼ inch 2 x 6 and drill a pocket hole in the beveled edge of the board. Then do the long side. Apply wood glue to the top of the base where the table rests. Then, drive wood screws from the bottom up to secure the top to the base. (You can skip the adhesive here if you want the option to remove the top later for repairs or maintenance.)

Now that all the table pieces are secured together, glue a pocket hole plug (or diagonally cut wooden dowel) into each hole. This step is optional, but recommended for aesthetic reasons, as you can see some holes in the base of the table.

Polish your table to get the look you want. If you plan to put your table outdoors, be sure to use outdoor finishing products. Outdoor paints or stains and polyurethanes are all excellent choices, as are Lifetime Wood treatments.
