Don’t get me wrong – we visited IKEA several times during the renovation process and used a lot of IKEA purchases in the film. However, there are times when you just have to “screw it, I’ll build this solid myself”. Building our own space-saving folding desk was definitely not worth it. But ours are much cooler / more special / customized for our needs. So finally we said, “Damn it, IKEA! You don’t belong to me!” Follow this DIY if you want to say it. We tried our best to copy this IKEA design and make a nice triangular bracket. We ended up making them from three different woods. Talking point: Carson wanted to cut the strap in one piece. said Jerry Kaibo. He said he had to build it with three different woods and Jerry won. Wood glue and screws were used for assembly. It is a triangle (right angle) that connects to the body of the T (that vertical board!) and from top to bottom.

Triangular support is installed. Everything fits nicely – now we need to fasten it with wooden nails.

The strap goes from left to right to the vertical support bar (there is a hinge there) and then another hinge to the horizontal support bar (the second hinge).

You will get there soon! Now you can securely fasten the triangular strap to the top so it doesn’t slip while you work. For this you will need a wooden peg, drill a hole the size of a wooden peg in your triangle. Insert half of the wooden stick into the hole with some wood glue. This half of the wooden plug was sticking out. Next, drill another hole of the same size as the wooden rod on the shaft above (in step 11). Voila, you now have a wooden dowel system that holds everything together.

Seal all the wood pieces, sand (or paint if you prefer) and seal them with a good coat of polyurethane.

It took a full day to design and build. Then another half day for painting and polyurethane. We did one last touch: we turned the edges. We thought we might have rushed the corner too much. Carson found a bend in the metal coffee (clever thinking!) and cut it with a jigsaw.

We think it’s worth it. We especially love the “double stitch” design that Mel gave us to tie in the back. We sat on this thing with an old wooden folding chair that Uncle Bob Carson gave us (okay, we took it).

Being smart, we brought the edges forward. Carson used an old coffee tin to create the shape. Then cut it out with a jigsaw. When I need to take a picture of something, I take it out to the small (very worn and dirty) plastic bench outside, set up a space bed and try to get the right picture. I was tired of doing all this while trying to get the dirty plastic bench out of the picture. So I told my husband I had a project and explained what I wanted – a large tray. This led to a conversation about what works and how we can make something better than a tray.
