How To Make Outdoor Chair Pads – I usually try to get videos when I make tutorials, but this is one of those projects where I can tell it’s not going to happen. So I took a lot of pictures and I’ll try to be as descriptive as possible of what I did. I’m posting this post on DIY Outdoor Cushions mainly to encourage you that if your outdoor cushions are looking sad, tired or old, you don’t need to buy a new bag to fix things up. You also don’t have to spend a lot of money on expensive new cushions. The beauty of this project is that not only did I save money (even more than the cost of replacing the cushions), but I had a lot of funky fabric with more patterns and colors than you’ll find when buying that outdoor cushion. . For example, this year it seems that green, red and beige are the only colors that can be used for outdoor furniture. As you can see, this is NOT my color theme!
All the fabric for this project is from Hobby Lobby. And yes, they were on sale so I stocked up more. It only takes a minute and you don’t have to waste paper and ink to print them, just display them. I got 4 chairs with “ropes”, a canopy and 3 rocking cushions. I won’t go into details about the canopy. I basically used the old ceiling as a model. But here’s a quick overview.

To start, I measured the old roof to at least have an estimate of how much fabric I would need to buy. So I added an extra yard just to be safe. I thought I could do this on a pillow or outdoor napkin if I didn’t have any!

I used a seam ripper to separate the old roof into pieces. I had to use my imagination for some parts because the fabric was destroyed.
My fabric wasn’t very wide, so I cut one of the pieces and glued two of them together to make one large piece. If you are struggling, this step will be easy. If you have a stiffer fabric, you may need to buy more to match the print to the correct shape. Make sure you sew too. This will strengthen your final project so it will hopefully last longer.
Be sure to install it before making and cutting. Measure twice cut once…you know the drill.

I laid the old roof over the new “large” piece of fabric and cut the pieces. Basically, it’s a 3 pattern with a large central part and two smaller curved sides.
I don’t know about you, but I think it turned out great. I had a lot of fun going down the stairs and into the back yard where I would put everything in the frame to make sure it would still fit. I put the old roof velcro back on because it was still fine. The old roof was more complicated because there was a fabric tunnel in the middle where the steel posts were supposed to go. I went through this process and it seems fine. I folded and pinned the front and back to the hinge post and just did a straight stitch.
I then repeated the process for the velcro side, literally treating the hinge like a giant clothespin and sticking the velcro where needed for a snug fit. In fact, you can make this canopy even easier by gluing all of the velcro and sewing it directly to the hinge. Personally, I have no intention of taking that roof off until it falls off and it’s time for a new one! Now, clean out your giant sewing machine and have a good rest so we can get started on our DIY pillows.

Both rocking and chair back cushions start the same way. I was very lucky because the fabric I chose was the PERFECT width. I don’t really need to cut it. Be sure to measure your pillows before hand, or just take them to the store if you’re worried about how much fabric to buy. I think they are all one and a half meters. If my mind was heavy, I might even go downstairs in a panic to find my paper to check for you.
So this is where I have to start. Such an old swing and chair! I didn’t have enough pillows so I used a homemade pillow. I wanted to make the whole process as easy as possible, so I immediately decided not to return one of the beautiful tubes that define every option you buy. This means that this project is not difficult at all. If you can sew straight lines or are comfortable making pillowcases, you should be able to handle this project.
The yellow cushions are old house cushions and they look great and are the best outdoors…so use what you have!

The first step is to cut away all the old fabric. If you want to use the save button again, I decided not to repeat it. My fabric is so nice I don’t need it anymore. If your pillows haven’t been cared for outside in the rain for years, you may find that the “white” pillowcase has mold as well. I didn’t want to risk spreading spores on my new fabric, and I didn’t want to spend money on new foam, so I came up with a workaround. Enter the famous white plastic bins. I used one for each half of the pillow. WARNING: It’s fun when you first sit down and the wind drops. The kids and I think it’s great, but you can skip this step if it bothers you.
You can see on the right side the beautiful fabric on the inside where I folded the corner a bit.
Then lay out the fabric and make sure it’s long enough to stretch from one end to the other. Don’t cut mine anymore. Again I think it’s 1.5 meters but maybe 1.75 meters. I’d wait until you’re done to cut something shorter than that first, because you want to leave room for gluing in the middle between the two cushions, and if you’re making the seat back, you have to. the extra cloth for that. Turn the fabric inside out so the pretty part is inside and the boring white is outside.

Now it’s time to hold the fabric with the presser foot and sew a straight seam along the bottom edge and right side. You’ll also want to do a twill or zigzag to make the fabric more secure. WARNING: Do not sew the top closed!
Turn your project right side out to reveal the beautiful fabric. Note that I have the “real” outer cushion on the bottom and the filler cushion on top. Outer cushions are wider and cover the entire seat if the cushions are not too large. The top feels so good you might not even notice if you haven’t done it yourself. And you won’t really notice the size difference once you’re in the chair.
I just wanted to point out again that the trash bag loop is in the middle and the smooth section goes all the way to the end.

The next part is a bit tricky. You can tilt it so you can see exactly where you are sewing. If you’re not like me, you probably don’t sew in a straight line. I have to admit, I didn’t care to pin it…not for ANY of the 7 cushions I made. Sew 2-3 straight rows to the right of the pillow. This will help give the pillow a more attractive look and help it fold in half.
The 2 rows of stitches you just finished will keep the pillow top from going down too much.
Now it’s time to add the pillow top (or pillows). Be sure to use a garbage bag to seal and cut it
