I could be wrong, but I think one of the pieces of furniture we replace the most in our home is the coffee table.

When we first moved in, we used what we had, a cheap and humble Ikea table. Soon after, I built my first coffee table. It didn’t require much woodworking. I made it out of galvanized pipe and wooden boards for the top. This is one of my favorites so far and still one of the most popular DIY plans!

Then I made a coffee table for the fake printer. It was inspired by the $1300 version from Restoration Hardware and I made it for only $200. This gave us a lot of space in the living room for blankets, pillows and other things that we don’t use every day but are easily accessible.
When we renovated our basement to add a playroom, office, and family room, I created this metal and wood coffee table. It was perfect for our family room, but we found we needed more toy storage. As girls’ toy collections grow, so should our storage skills!
When designing this coffee table, I tried to maximize all the space for storage. I thought about making it an elevator, but there is an elevator in the living room and if you want to get something, you have to take everything off and it’s a real pain. With this design, children can open and close the drawer with its contents.

I purposely designed the coffee table to sit on the floor. I don’t want to step on it and Legos and goldfish and other little things go down. I’m tired of getting down on my hands and knees to find my doll’s missing shoe! These things are very small and don’t stay on the doll very long. This solves the problem.
I want our kids to be able to resist putting their weight on an open drawer so there is no danger. I’ve even seen our kids use the coffee table as a platform for impromptu performances. If they decided to play my favorite songs while standing on top, I wouldn’t worry about tipping over or falling over…heck, I can even stand on top of them!
This coffee table with storage project is easy to make with free plans for the beginner woodworker. This is a small and manageable project that can be completed in a weekend!

Diy Wood Coffee Table With Hidden Storage

We got wood with a saw. The frame is made from 1×12. If the jigsaw doesn’t cut a full 12 inches, simply flip the board over and make the first cut, followed by the second cut.
We used a kreg jig to drill pocket holes into three 33″ boards. Check out our favorite Kreg jig models on Amazon here!

We drilled 3/4″ pocket holes and attached these boards to our boards using 1.25″ slotted screws.
Once the box is ready, make the top and bottom. They use 1×6 and 1×6 boards. Here are the cuts you need to make.
Attach the base using wood glue and nails. Start by gluing the center plate first, then glue the sides in the same way.

Turn the table over and attach the middle table top like the base. Then we made two covers by attaching the two boards together with a 3/4″ pocket hole and a 1.25″ pocket hole screw.
Before installing the cover, we use a sander to cover it and hide the whole part. We used Varathane stain on the ash. We love the rustic look of ash stains.
Here is the new coffee table, all done! I love the look of this rustic coffee table and the storage is amazing! The style is versatile and complements most decorations.

We used a commercially available pine cone. If you don’t like sand, consider getting better wood to save time and headaches. If you want a simpler project, use the grinder below, but you’ll need to sand more.

(1) Panel for the project, the plan calls for 36″ x 15-1/4″, we bought a 36″ x 16″ panel at Menards and had to cut it. This is the closest I have found online, we have everything in stock.
Cut your 1×4 into 16 pieces with these measurements. Together, they form the four sides of the table. We painted them.
Cut your 1×3 and 1×4 into 4 pieces with these dimensions. These are your corner pieces. We painted them white.

Cut another 1×2 to 36 inches. This will be the part of the box cover that you attach the hinge to. We painted this piece to match the project panel for a cohesive look.
Cut your 1×8 to make 2 pieces 33 inches long. They are attached with a kreg jig and pocket hole screws. We painted them.
