How To Build A Patio Table

How To Build A Patio Table – Some good friends of ours are doing a complete backyard renovation and asked me if I could build a table for them under their new covered patio. They need an extra-long, custom-sized table to hold a conversation. And today I’m teaming up with my friends at DAP Products to show you how I did it.

For this project I want to try something new with my actual welding method, so I bought a Festool domino and used original DAP Weldwood dominoes and wood glue to build the table. As mentioned above, the steps I took were easily modified to use Kreg’s Pocket Hole Jig and Outdoor Pocket Screws.

I’ve put together a step-by-step printing plan. This includes the bill of materials and cut list for this project.

I used knotty poplar for this table. which I milled 2×4 to a small thickness for this project. You can do the same or buy wood from your local hardware store. Cedar and redwood make great patio furniture, but you can also use pine.

The leg of this table is big and thick. So I cut the 2×4 an inch or so longer than needed. and attach the two leaves to the legs. I applied the glue to the board with a silicone brush. Then pin together to dry.

Once the glue was dry, I ran the legs over with a putty knife to remove the bruised glue and smooth it out. Make sure you count the number of passes on each side. so do the same for each leg of the table.

When I finish my legs, I move to the table top. which takes some time to dry. I cut all the boards to length and laid them out on my workbench. I used a square to mark where all the dominoes would go. Then use my dominoes to dig through the dominoes.

This can also be done with a hole saw, drilling a 1 1/2 inch hole in the wood. and secure the table top with wood glue and 2 1/2-inch screws.

To assemble the table top, I placed a domino flap in the hole on each board. Then apply glue to the edge of the next board and glue the grooves on that board as well. I put the table tops together, clamped and let dry.

To create the table frame, I cut the table legs lengthwise at a 5 degree angle to allow the legs to stick out a bit. I added a stretcher to the bottom of each side to add strength and support to each leg.

I marked the position of the stretcher 3 inches from the bottom of the legs. I added wood glue and drilled two 1/8″ pilot holes on each end of the stretcher. I temporarily secured it with 2 1/2 inch wood screws in the hole at the top.

I used a 3/8″ drill bit to drill holes about 1/2″ deep in the stretcher, then put 2 1/2″ wood screws into those holes. I removed the top bolt and followed the same process.

I cut the 3/8″ dowels into small pieces, put some glue on them and tapped them in place with a rubber mallet. I wiped off the excess glue with a towel. Cut the lid over the top of the wood. and polish everything smooth

For the frame on the bottom of the table I plan to assemble it with dominoes as well. I forgot to do this step before attaching the stretcher to the bottom of the legs. So I grabbed my trusty pocket hole gauge and drilled a 1 1/2″ hole in each end of the board and attached them with 2 1/2″ screws and glue.

For the rest of the frame I used domino dowels to locate everything and line up the lines. I glued the dowels in place, secured the porous material that placed the dowels into the grooves, and added glue to the joints. I put everything together and let it dry.

For the legs, I marked the centers of the legs that will connect to the table frame. and do the same with the ends of the long frame pieces. I ran grooves into each groove and glued the dominoes in place. I attached the legs to the end of the frame. Add wood glue to the joints. Then turn it on and let it dry.

Once the table base frame was dry, I added a stretcher the length of the table and attached it to the stretcher I placed on the legs. This again gives the table strength and stability. I attached the stretcher the same way as before, using wood screws and 2 1/2 inch wood dowels to plug the holes.

Once the table frame was complete, I then returned to the table top. I raised the end of the table with an adjustable cutting system. You can also use a circular saw and a straight board as a fence.

The table will have a peg table top. So I cut it a little longer than the width of the table and ripped it to its width on the table saw.

I routed the grooves of the dominoes to the end of the table and the inside edge of the end of the pegboard. Then glue the domino to the edge of the table.

I will get conflicts here. But I’ve never had the experience of moving chopsticks or attaching a breadboard with glue and screws. If desired, you can attach the edge of the breadboard with glue and screws. I assembled the breadboard and tied the chopsticks at the end. But I really didn’t expect it. that this will happen in our dry Arizona climate.

To secure the end of the pegboard, I added glue to the middle three dowels and attached the end of the board to the table. At the end of the table I made a mark on the breadboard where the center point of the lid is. so i can dig through and dig.

I marked the desired depth on the drill bit with tape and drilled a 1/4 inch hole through the dowel in the wood. but not from the other side of the board. I taped a 1/4″ inch into the hole and added glue to the last 1/2″ of the dowel to hold it in place. But still the stick can move. I cut it on a flat table and sanded everything flat.

I recreated the adjustable cutting system to cut the grain edge flush with the table edge. Then clean the entire table to prepare the stain and complete the design.

I stained the table top with weathered oak and applied four coats of exterior varnish. I used Total Boat Halcyon Clear Coat because I didn’t want the amber finish on the wood and it would ruin the weathered gray paint.
