I recently decided to design and build a new rocking chair. I’ve designed and built some rockers, but my past attempts haven’t rocked the way I want them to. I’m pretty confident in my ability to make a comfortable “regular” chair, but I seem to have a completely different problem with rocking chairs. So I decided to take a closer look at how the rocking chairs of yesteryear work. I am trying to understand the geometry of the rocking chair in hopes of improving my overall grades.

There are many factors that affect a rocking chair. Apart from the usual requirements for a chair to be structurally sound, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing (at least that’s what I was looking for), the rocking chair adds the challenge of dynamic movement.

High Quality Rocking Chair Solid Acacia Wood Easy Assembly
First, we need a device that forms the rocker. I simply took a piece of wood measuring 15 x 5.0 x 90 cm and cut a curve on one side. We don’t care how big the curve is as long as the cut is symmetrical.
To make the yoke, you will need 6 boards measuring 3.0 cm wide by 0.8 cm high and 85 cm long. Apply wood glue to all the strips and place them on the bodies. Using sacrificial bands, apply pressure using multiple clamps. You need to make two such details.
After you have prepared the parts, you need to make the grooves where you will insert the spikes from the chair legs. The groove should be 5.0 cm from the edge of each rocker. I used a special machine for this job, but you can always use a chisel and hammer and you’ll get the same result. The machine does nothing but make it run faster.

Cut 4 pieces of wood 80 x 2.5 x 7 cm for the four legs. On the bandsaw, make a spike for each leg. The pin must fit into the groove of the rocker arm.
Time to add a seat support. We will again use the mortise and tenon technique to hold the pieces together.
The seat support is made of the same wood as the legs. Position it at an angle to the leg and mark where you want the groove to be. Again, use the chisel to make a notch and install the seat bracket. Use wood glue and some clamps to put everything together. Allow the glue to dry overnight.
Clothespin Rocking Chair: So Easy To Make
We need to add support rails to assemble the sides of the chair. For the front and back rails I used two pieces of wood measuring 60 x 2.5 x 7 cm. For the front I used the mortise technique and for the back I used 10mm dowels.
For the back, I made a 80 x 60 cm frame and drilled some slots in the top and bottom to allow the slats to go in. The slats are made of wooden blocks measuring 0.8 x 4.0 x 73 cm, all edges rounded with a milling cutter. and round bit.
Attach the back to the sides using 10mm dowels and a 10mm drill as shown.

For the seat I used a 30mm wooden top from the workshop. It is durable and made from the same kind of wood I use. I just had to make it 55 x 60 cm to fit between the seat posts. I then used some screws to hold it in place.
My original thought was to make the arms slightly curved, but then I decided that even a curved arm would look better than a straight one. So I used two pieces of wood 50 x 7.0 x 2.5 cm, carved them on the band saw and made two slots to hold the back of the chair. By making these slots, I don’t need to add extra rails on the back. I rounded all the edges with a router bit and secured with wood glue and wood dowels.
Now you have a nice rocking chair. My wife already likes the one I made for her, but I’m a little jealous, so I’m going to make one for myself.
