How To Make Ikea Table More Sturdy – Oh, so cool! So, since we’ve been in our Nashville home for over 3 years, I’ve been itching to make some room updates and our dining room is one of the first rooms on the list. What we did when we moved.
We’ve had our own DIY dining table for about six years now and I thought it might be fun to make different shapes to change the feel of the space. I looked at a large oval dining table that would seat six, but couldn’t find one in our price range. So I’m trying to figure out how to DIY on a budget.
How To Make Ikea Table More Sturdy
I quickly realized that a vintage tulip table base (bottom only) could be sold for a reasonable price, but I remember that Ikea sells the DOCKSTA tulip table and if I modify the existing top, we can use this base for DIY. An oval table!

Since it will be a larger table than the current Ikea base, I checked the dimensions of other tulip dining tables of the same size to make sure the base was the right size just to be safe. And I’ve found some with the same base size that can support larger tablets like ours.
As a model for my oval shape, I used a cardboard cut to fit half of the main table shape. I placed a large round tray on the edge of the table to trace the edge of the oval and then folded a line along the edge of my cardboard to the center of the table.
I wanted it to have a clear oval shape, but there wasn’t room to put it on the edge of the table so it wouldn’t be too thin, so I played around with twists to make it look just right. Then we can cut one side of my oval shape to the curve and fold the cardboard in half to trace the other side of my oval.

Examining the ellipse at one end, we simply rotate it to the other side so we know that all angles match.
Then we remove the table legs, turn the table over and follow the diagram below again to see where to remove the screws from the board brackets that hold the board. together.
I also wanted the table to be twice as thick so it would look more compact and hide the brackets.

So, using the tracing line below as a guide, we will cut and add wood that covers the line around the table.
You can see what the additional panel looks like in the photo above and how it covers the entire electrode curve. When we cut the oval, it looks twice as thick as the sides – good trick, right?
After the bottom pieces are secured, we turn the table over and use a cutter to cut the oval we saw above. We used several grades of sandpaper (two to very fine) to smooth both sides as best we could.
Dining Room Sets
Then we put the table on the Ikea table base and put a primer and a little eco-friendly lacquer coating on our table. I like using nail polish for tables because it dries and is smoother than regular paint, so you feel more comfortable getting off the table before you need a touch up coat.
Once the floor is completely dry (I usually leave the varnish on for a few days before putting anything on top) it’s ready to go! I love the new look of the charm table and the 60’s/70’s vibe to the room.
So we replaced the Ikea table with this table to have a slightly larger table in the breakfast area so as not to waste any room (and the lower legs make art/games). Best kids. A table too! )
