I would first like to provide a picture of the materials we used for our DIY lamp so you can see everything. As a base, we used the four ribbon spools we mentioned as well as a wooden board from the craft store.
You may be asking yourself where you can find spools – well, check eBay! They come in a ton of different sizes (begging to be made into a lamp!).
Here are the DIY lamp supplies we used! The only thing we didn’t use was the fixture pipe (the long brass pipe in the picture). We only needed one, so we returned the extra.

To begin your DIY lamp project, you’ll glue washers to the top and bottom of the spool. This means that you should choose flat washers from the hardware section of Home Depot that 1) cover your spool hole and 2) allow the pipe to pass through easily. The center hole of the washer should be slightly larger than the fixture pipes.
The whole reason for doing this washer/pipe combo on a top spool is so your pipe won’t spin around inside the spool. You want the pipe to be secure and strong.
Once you’ve decided on the washer size, glue one washer to the top of the spool – then glue the other washer to the bottom. You want the holes to be in the center of the spool holes. Better to close your eyes. Allow to dry.

Once your washers are dry, paint the spool a color that matches your duct tape. Allow to dry and cover all spools in centers with duck tape.
At the same time, paint your wood planks a contrasting color and let dry. The wood plank is your base.
On the spool with washers, you cover one end (which is the end of your DIY table lamp) with duct tape.

Do this by placing three pieces of duck tape, overlapping, on the bottom of the craft mat. Place the spool and cut out the circle with a craft knife.
Cut a hole in the top dock tape with a craft knife and attach the fixture pipe. Leave about 1/2″ of fixture pipe open and tighten the lock nut with a wrench. Then put the coupling on it and tighten it. This is the top of your DIY lamp.
Turn the spool over and also tighten the locking nut on the other end. Your fixture pipe should be nice and secure inside your top spool.
