How To Make Table Light

How To Make Table Light – For the workroom makeover (Fall 2019 One Room Challenge), I struggled to find lampshades that matched my vintage 1950’s Atom Ranch style lamps. I finally found some lampshades that were the right size at Target, but almost all Target lampshades use colored fittings. I rewired this lamp, so it has a new socket, but it’s not a UNO fitting (sometimes called a Nordy fitting). As a result, the lampshade of the lamp is terrible.

Use only electrical tape for this project. Electrical tape is flame retardant, and if you install it in an area where heat can be a problem (especially if something happens), any other type of tape or paper can be dangerous. I’ve seen others recommend cardboard and other combustible materials as solutions to this problem. I am very wary of such suggestions.

Preheat the hot glue gun. Working from the top of the lamp base, apply hot glue in small sections and wrap the bead around the lamp (photo 1). Press the beads into the hot glue as you go, holding each section until cool (photo 2). Tip: Choose a lamp base to work with this treatment. A simple shape is best. A base with carved details or lots of curves makes it difficult to wrap the bead.

Cover with scissors and trim until the top trim is covered in shade. Repeat the process for the lower shade trim. Tip: Alternatively, if desired, the entire shed can be wrapped in rope. However, this may reduce the brightness of the lamp.

I never thought I could make my own DIY table lamp. I’ll be honest, I’m a little afraid of wiring. I’ve seen many things over the years that have made me think, “That’s wonderful as a lamp,” but thoughts of lighting my room on fire have always kept me from doing so.

But then I finished a different project, and I was left with four sturdy MDF spools. I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away. So I use it again! Spool in my brain

I would first like to provide a picture of the materials we used for our DIY lamp so you can see everything. As a base, we used the four ribbon spools we mentioned as well as a wooden board from the craft store.

You may be asking yourself where you can find spools – well, check eBay! They come in a ton of different sizes (begging to be made into a lamp!).

Here are the DIY lamp supplies we used! The only thing we didn’t use was the fixture pipe (the long brass pipe in the picture). We only needed one, so we returned the extra.

To begin your DIY lamp project, you’ll glue washers to the top and bottom of the spool. This means that you should choose flat washers from the hardware section of Home Depot that 1) cover your spool hole and 2) allow the pipe to pass through easily. The center hole of the washer should be slightly larger than the fixture pipes.

The whole reason for doing this washer/pipe combo on a top spool is so your pipe won’t spin around inside the spool. You want the pipe to be secure and strong.

Once you’ve decided on the washer size, glue one washer to the top of the spool – then glue the other washer to the bottom. You want the holes to be in the center of the spool holes. Better to close your eyes. Allow to dry.

Once your washers are dry, paint the spool a color that matches your duct tape. Allow to dry and cover all spools in centers with duck tape.

At the same time, paint your wood planks a contrasting color and let dry. The wood plank is your base.

Cut a hole in the top dock tape with a craft knife and attach the fixture pipe. Leave about 1/2″ of fixture pipe open and tighten the lock nut with a wrench. Then put the coupling on it and tighten it. This is the top of your DIY lamp.

Turn the spool over and also tighten the locking nut on the other end. Your fixture pipe should be nice and secure inside your top spool.

Yes – you can pull the cord through the bottom of the spool – but you will need to drill a hole in the wooden board and make a recess so that the cord sits inside the board. it’s very easy.
