This lounge chair is made of cardboard! No fasteners, no joints, just friction and holes. With two and a half 4’X4′ sheets of heavy duty paper, pattern paper, and a box cutter, you can make a nice and sturdy one in a few hours.

Cardboard Chair Instructions
I went with the dimensions of the Barcelona Pavilion seats as a starting point. The design of the chair is a rough theme that I followed the body and dimensions of this chair as a way to focus on the materials and the test model. Also, I found the seat comfortable. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
After deciding on the width of the seat, I moved on to think about the legislature. Since cardboard is rigid and flexible, I see no reason to use glue or fasteners for the joints. I designed the seat to be a press-fit joint, hoping that the friction between the plane parts and the semi-rigidity would hold everything in place.
After measuring the thickness of the cardboard, I came up with several computer iterations before deciding on one. The latest iteration seems the best to me for several reasons. I was inspired by Cherigami for this project, and they seemed to make furniture like this very well.

The PDF “pattern” can be printed to scale and made into a pattern that you can stick to a surface and trace with a box cutter. DWG files are CAD files that can be used for cutting or other CNC cutting.

I used a Metabeam laser cutter for most of this project, but I show here how to do it by hand. It is completely possible with a box with a straight edge and patterns, it takes more time. Here are the steps to do it manually:

I placed it on the table so the edges lay flat on the table top, and used it to create creases. It is very easy and goes very fast.
Easy assembly! All you have to do is bend the face with the correct holes and assemble it. Each piece makes it stable, and when you finish you end up with a rock chair made of paper!

Cardboard furniture has been around for a while, since the early 70s. Frank Gehry’s “wiggle chair,” designed in 1968, was one of the first pieces of furniture. It is still available today. A beautiful organic chair-like chair, made of cardboard with some hidden extras. At the same time, an Otto cardboard chair by Peter Racke (with a German accent) came out, if I may say so, and a table for children and a nice chair designed by Ricky Watanabeth from Japan. The technique used by Peter and Ricky is not Gehry’s at all, but the packaging is similar.
Since two different chairs came out, cardboard has become popular among many designers, creative students and most creatively – children.
