Answer: Installing a closed Madison box outlet is a simple method of mounting some types of metal box to the wall. They are also known as Old Work Snare Brackets, Bracket Clips, F Clips, Madison Clips, and Madison Straps.

Photo above showing Madison bars, which come in two different lengths. They work longer on walls with a double roof or a finished surface, such as a tile or a floor that thickens the back.
Also shown are screw fasteners that can also be used to attach metal boxes to drywall. They snap into place with some force. Once the box is on the wall, tighten the screws and fit the clip between the box and the wall. You can also buy some outlet boxes with clips built into them.
In the example below, a hole is made of a jigsaw. A metal box was attached to the wall and a lead line was drawn on the surface. Note the notches in the lower right and lower left corners. The screws that protrude from this side should be clear so that all metal boxes of this type are walkable.
Key boxes can be fixed by removing one or both ends and the boxes are bolted together with additional boxes to create a multi-switch or outlet box. You can add as many links as you need; and the more crews, the more difficult it will be to find wall panels to cover the finished work.

I drilled a hole in the top face of the electrical box against the wall and made a sketch with a brush to follow with my jigsaw.
The ground wire is connected to the top of the box with a separate 10-32 ground screw. Consult Section 314 of the National Electrical Code for the correct size of electrical box required for the number of wires and devices it contains.

It is important that the hole is cut exactly right when installing the electrical connection box with the Madison busbars. If the hole is too large, the lugs in the electrical box will not hold against the wall to pull the Madison box bars.
An ideal location for a new junction box is next to a wooden bubble wall. In that scenario, drill a 3/16″ hole about halfway up the side of the drain box, which will be against the wooden boss. After the Madison bars are securely installed, #8 x 1 1/2″ screw of 4″ sheet metal into the wood stud. Do not undercut the screws as this will cause them to twist and bend.
When the box is mounted on the wood next to the nail, it is best to cut a small notch in the wood where the tab of the screw protruding from the outside of the box will touch the wood. This is done as a straight box; otherwise, the tab of the screw will be a protruding case with a tip.
I used a jigsaw to cut, wood, a chisel, and a hammer. However, ever since I got the multifunction oscillating power tool, I’ve been using it. The photo below shows the wooden study area on the left wall.
How To Add An Electrical Outlet
In the photo above, there is a notch in the lower left section of the wood stud to accommodate the common screw in the common box. I used a multifunction oscillating tool to make the incision.
All extra cable ties must be removed, as each one counts to fill the extra cable with the counting box. See section 314.16 and tables 314.16(A) and 314.16(B) of the National Electrical Code.
Route the wire to the electrical box and tighten the clamps enough so that the wire cannot be easily pulled out. Don’t go around the clips, because this can make the internal short in tow. Remove the other unused terminal completely and save the screw for the ground connection. In the photo below, all the clips have been pulled out and 10/32 machine screws have been inserted into the foundation.

The box pictured above is attached to the wall outlet with a Madison bar and #8 sheet metal screws 10/32 screws on the bottom right.
Wrap the ground wire around the 10/32 ground screw clockwise and tighten the screw as it rests on the metal electrical box. Click here to read my blog post on ground points and breakers.
With the rope attached, you can push the exit box to the wall and place Madison’s bar next to the box. The long side slides so that the short side of the Madison Bar can go into the wall. With the opposite side of the electrical box protruding about 1/4″ – 3/8″, press the side of the box with the Madison plug firmly into the wall with a large flat head screwdriver.
While holding one side of the case with a large screwdriver, bend the metal tabs on the Madison bar in the case. Press the tabs firmly with long nose pliers.
Tips For Electrical Box Installation
It’s important to note that the opposite side of the drain is slightly stuck. This will make the Madison bar very hard on that side and hold the box more securely on the wall.
You can use the big flat head alone to push the box against the wall and hold it there; the bigger, the easier. This ensures that the box is held firmly. Use long-nose pliers to clamp the Madison sieve firmly against the metal electrical box.
Place the second Madison bar on the other side of the electrical box with the long end of the Madison bar pointing away from the first Madison bar. You will fan the box with a large flat head only and bend the metal tabs. Press the tabs firmly with needle nose pliers or long nose pliers.
When installing a shootout box with Madison bars, once the Madison bars are fully in place, the outlet box should be very close to the wall. He is not paid. Notice how the screw hole tabs on the top and bottom of the box are slightly back on the wall. Inside the back box is a bare copper wire attached to the ground with 10/32 metal box screws.
Tapping Into An Existing Outlet
After the case is determined, you will be able to tighten it gently with the needle and press it down with your tweezers.
UPDATE: The method used to ground the electrical box above, wrapping the bare ground conductor of the power cord around a 10/32 screw and using an extra length pigtail to connect the power device is no longer allowed. wiring
Now you need a separate ground wire to the ground box, and then connect all the ground wires with the additional ground wire connecting the green screw on the wiring device. Basing the technology on the photograph is prohibited under section 250.148(C) of the 2020 National Electrical Code.
Remove the tabs when installing a wiring device, such as a switch or outlet, in a metal box that has tabs on the surface of the wall. The wall plate will fit the wall better. In the picture below I removed the ears of the photo GFCI receptacle.

I prefer to install an old electrical work box next to the wall of the study so that a wood or sheet metal screw can be driven through the hole in the box directly into the wooden studs in addition to the Madison bars. This makes the box very safe. However, in this job, the client wanted the container installed in the above exact location.
The photo below shows without the ears as the devices sit closer to the wall. The copper colored clip on the bottom of the GFCI outlet is self-grounding. This means that the output is grounded through the screw and no additional grounding conductor is required. But still connect the ground to the output lead to ensure a good ground connection.
