Since the renovation is going on, I have remodeled the house. Man it’s a slow process! Everything seems to take about three times as long I think. But on the other hand, it’s a FUN process! The most interesting for me (obvi) are DIY projects. Topping the list is a leather chair I recently made, which sits beautifully in the corner of my bedroom. It’s amazing what you can do with some Glidden® paint and some leather. Here’s a complete guide on how you can make your own!

Glidden’s color is Onyx Black (Don’t worry, Glidden only comes in black to make your job easier! P.S. I used satin satin.)
How To Diy A Sling Chair
Leather (For those of you following the Leather Sofa Chronicles series, I used leather from an old couch.)
First, remove the fabric from the beach chair. To do this, undo the pins at each end and then remove the fabric.
Next, paint the seat frame along with the end of the latch. I used a large brush for most of the chair frame and a small brush to get into hard to reach areas.

Third, cut a piece of leather the size of the removed fabric, adding 3 inches to the short end. You will need this extra fabric for folding and sewing. This will act as a bag to put the pegs in, so your leather stays in place on the saddle.
Fold an additional 3 inches of fabric on each short end, making sure you have enough room for the dowels.
Sew this end with a sewing machine, leather needle, and leather thread. Double stitching to reinforce the handle

Pull the stitched fabric end through the slits in the seat. It takes a bit of tugging and pulling to get started, but once you get through the skin, it’s easy to pull the rest out.

I’m trying to learn Google Sketch-Up. I took a class at SNAP taught by Ryan The Design Confidential and felt confident that I could start drawing my own interior plans. Then I come back home. Assume there is a steep learning curve. I’m still working on it though. I promise I will eventually have an interior plan for all of you. Even if it kills me. So I waited to share this hanging chair until I had a plan ready, but since it could take a while, I decided to go ahead and share the build.

Despite how it looks, this chair is actually quite cheap and easy to assemble. The only caveat is that it MUST be made of solid wood. Sorry, but he didn’t rummage through the trash at Home Depot for this project. The minimalist design of this chair calls for the durability of solid hardwood, pine won’t cut. I used poplar because I love the cool natural color and grain. Oak would be another good and affordable option.
The first step is to cut your corner leg. My seat was nice and comfortable. If you don’t like the relaxed, reclining style, you may want a slightly shallower back angle. The total length is again 33″. I wanted the leg part to be 4″ high, so I cut off the 2.33″ length first. Then I marked 4″ from one end. Next, I set the table on my angle saw at a 10 degree angle and cut at the marker.

Then I drilled 2 pocket holes on the long side of the 4″ piece. At this point I flipped the cut edges back and aligned the short piece with the long piece. I applied a thin layer of wood glue to each end and attached it. two pieces with pocket screws, when dry I have 2 more legs, each folded 20 degrees.
Time to get together. I first attached each piece with two 2-inch finishing nails and glue. Then I pre-drilled and screwed 3 inches into the wood at each joint.
I started by building the rear frame, then the front frame, and finally joined the two. To account for the backrest, the armrests and side supports are cut 90 degrees at one end and 70 degrees at the other.

At this point, I filled all the screw holes and seams with wood filler. After letting it dry overnight, I thoroughly polished the entire piece.
Making the conclusion is quite interesting. I started by spraying a black primer over the entire frame. Then apply a coat of Oil Rubbbed Bronze spray paint. Then I sprayed a layer of metallic silver and let it dry to about 90%. Then I took the 100-grit sandpaper and started playing, being careful not to sand all the way down to the bare wood. Since silver doesn’t dry completely, it comes out at random. I think the final look looks a bit bare steel.
Now it’s time for the slingshot. The inner width of the seat is 20″. I wanted to make sure the sling could move freely between the arms, so I cut the bars down to 19″.

Once they were all trimmed, I had to pre-drill where they would attach to the leather strap. Being a perfectionist, I wanted to make sure I drilled the holes in the same place on each piece of wood. For this purpose, I strongly recommend building a simple fixture. For mine, I just screwed 2 leftover 1×2 pieces into a scrap board. This provides a nice square pocket to align each bar. Since I have a drill, all I have to do is align the fixture under the drill and clamp. That way, I can drill a hole, rotate the crossbar, and drill another. If you don’t have a drill, don’t worry, a hand drill will work just fine.
For leather straps, I find the cheapest and strongest solution is to use a leather belt. I was able to find this 52-inch leather belt for less than $5.
I used 1/8″ x 5/8″ pop rivets to attach each slat to the leather using 2 wood blocks to ensure each slat was spaced evenly. I’m about to have a tutorial on how to use the Pop Rivet Gunon skin.

The final step is to drill the wood and leather frame, and attach the leather strap with screws and nuts (3/8 x 1.25″ for the top and 3/8 x 2″ for the bottom).
I was looking for a contrast between the bare wooden slats and the shiny metallic coating. I think brown leather gives a nice, organic yet masculine look.
Poplar was criticized as “ugly wood”. Are you kidding me?! Look at the beautiful variation of cool tones. This is my new favorite wood!
